Indian Navy gets firepower in its armoury

MUMBAI: The Indian Navy (IN) have got a major fillip to its firepower with the arrival of its newest acquisition INS Tarkash, at Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on December 26. Built by the Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad, Russia INS Tarkash was commissioned on November 9 by Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command.

Defence official said that INS Tarkash is the second of three project 1135.6 follow-on ships ordered by Indian Navy, the first being INS Teg, which joined the fleet in June this year. Chief PRO (Defence) N Vispute said that commanded by Captain Antony George, an Anti-submarine Warfare Specialist, and manned by a crew of 23 officers and 228 sailors, INS Tarkash is armed with an advanced combat suite, comprising an optimal blend of Russian and Indian cutting edge technologies. Tarkash's Arsenal includes the 'Brahmos' Supersonic Cruise Missiles, Surface-to-air Missile System, Medium Range Gun, Close-in Weapon System, Torpedoes and Anti-submarine Rockets.

On arrival at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, the ship and her crew were accorded a warm reception. The welcome ceremony was presided over by Rear Admiral AR Karve, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, and witnessed by senior officers of the Western Naval Command, together with the family members of the ship's crew who turned out in large numbers. Vispute said that during her maiden return passage, as part of the Navy's Maritime Diplomatic Initiative, the ship made port calls at several ports to strengthen bridges of friendship and international co-operation with the host countries.

Why the switch back to AK630 from Kashtan?

India should go for American made ships. Its ACs are sitting ducks without an Aegis destroyer protecting the AC.

So you mean American AC are sitting ducks because the Aegis destroyer is protecting them.:what:

Can you provide the source where they did? I couldn't find it.

Look at the image: there is an AK630 where the first batch of 3 ships had a Kashtan firing unit. It is the same on the units being built for the Russian navy!

Purely guess, but there could be plans for the barak 8. So the 9M311 missile that comes with Kashtan is not required.

Well, I doubt that. For starters, where would the 2x2 eight round VLUs be mounted and where would the 2 × ELTA EL/M 2221 STGR go?

Sorry, thanks for the correction.

Well I don't think Americans would sell India any ship, there is still the issue of technology that the US is not likely to share. Which is why India usually buys from Russia and France who willingly share their technology case and point the Arihant Nuke sub which had assistance from the Russian or at least it incorporates some Russian design.

Most likely, IN´s ACs will be more of a sitting duck than a US´s AC because the latter has Aegis cruisers and destroyers and the former doesn´t. But this would be true also for Russian and Chinese ACs (and maybe even also British and France ACs) and I don´t see them turning to US ships anytime soon. Moreover, with new ships in the pipeline (15A and 17A and further developments), INs carriers will not be easy targets.

Otherwise: OFF TOPIC!

Mate it was a mistake on his part, he meant India should buy US ships with Aegis defense system.

Well, in that case, I think he may be underestimating the capabilities of the latest generation of Eurofrigates (Dutch LCF, German F124) and destroyers (Type 45, Horizon) somewhat.

I don't believe either 15A or 17A can reach the capability of a Aegis ships. Also, given that it takes India a decade to come up with a new class of ships, it would serve them better if they can buy the US ships.

He's here to do his idiotic trolling and off topic crap he does on all india related threads. Ignore him.

Well, the South Koreans and Japanese built their own Arleigh Burke derivatives with US coorperation, who knows what India might be able to do at some point in the future. Next is Australia with their Spanish F100 (another eurofrigate) derived AWD that uses Aegis. Scaling down one more step is Norways Spanish built Nansen class. The first three countries are key US allies in Asia essentially since WW2 and Spain and Norway are NATO partners, so ... don´t hold your breath!
