Bangladesh-Myanmar sea limits verdict Wed

ok it means our claim of extended rising land territory under sea was denied but we won in equity vs equidistant debate....

so according to Eastwatch's claim all the area that is now sea can be claimed by Bangladesh!!!

Not related to your question, but, people are not aware of one very important factor in delineating the sea territory of a country. This factor is the line of CONTINENTAL SHELF. What is a this? It is a line where the land of a certain country was extended 10,000 years ago during the last ICE AGE. If someone googles the BOB map and see it from a close he will see the continental shelf of BD lies many hundred miles away from the present day BD. This is our base line for claiming theterritory or economic activities.

But, in case of Burma and also in case of most pf India's eastern zone the shelf lies quite near their present sea shore. So, the position of these two countries, vis-a-vis BD is weak. India is strong only in its part BoB in the south of west Bengal, because the shelf line there is also quite far from the sea shore.

I was expecting a good result for BD in the international arbitration, and I am happy that we have won a fair verdict. The country may have more than 100 trillion cft of gas. US geological survey report speaks of only about 32 trillion cft of onshore (offshore not included) gas reserves, though.

Can you please put the map over here!!!

See the author quoted st Martins island, dipu mini is just being a politician. She twisted it to the public by saying we got stuck. Martins where the island was not disputes in the first place

Apologies for the long post, but while I've lurked here for a long time and always fought my urge to post, not so today.

How old are you? And why do you have such troubles with comprehension?

No where does Dipu Moni or the article say St. Martin was in dispute....

You say you listened/watched the judgement....but you obviously didn't do it properly....or we go back to my original question, your issues with comprehension!

I quote...and this is from the actual judgement(which is free to download from the ITLOS website)

http://www.itlos.org/fileadmin/itlos/documents/cases/case_no_16/1-C16_Judgment_14_02_2012.pdf

132. Myanmar contends that St. Martin’s Island is a feature standing alone in the geography of Bangladesh and is situated opposite the mainland of Myanmar, not Bangladesh. In Myanmar’s view, granting St. Martin’s Island full effect throughout the territorial sea delimitation would lead to a considerable distortion with respect to the general configuration of the coastline, created by a relatively small feature.

Page 48 of the document
141. Bangladesh, in support of its argument that St. Martin’s Island should be accorded full effect, refers to the treatment of certain islands in the case concerning Maritime Delimitation and Territorial Questions between Qatar and Bahrain, the case concerning Territorial and Maritime Dispute between Nicaragua and Honduras in the Caribbean Sea (Nicaragua v. Honduras) and the Black Sea case.

Page 53 of the document
164. Having concluded that full effect should be given to St. Martin’s Island, the Tribunal decides that the delimitation line should follow an equidistance line up to the point beyond which the territorial seas of the Parties no longer overlap.

After the verdict....

168. The Tribunal observes that, in giving St. Martin’s Island full effect in the delimitation of the territorial sea, the delimitation line will reach a point where the island’s territorial sea no longer overlaps with the territorial sea of Myanmar. At this point, the territorial sea around St. Martin’s Island begins to meet the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of Myanmar. This will occur in the area defined by the 12 nm envelope of arcs of the territorial sea of St. Martin’s Island beyond point 8.

This is what the tribunal decided Bangladesh should legally receive

This is what that in means in terms of the earlier map we saw and the claims - it is obviously Bangladesh won in this instance. Anyone arguing anything else, needs to stop embarrassing themselves.

Hopefully this will clear up some of the confusions people have. Now back to lurking I go.

well AL serves india not burma

All crap. AL only wants vote, like BNP, and thats^^ not the perfect way to get votes. Anyways, credit goes to the lawyers, not AL.

And you won't find idune posting here for a while. He wen't into (using idune's language) "tactical hiding".

you can always count on a jew to back you up in court....never fails...OJ simpson .....now bangladesh:chilli:

indians are instigating Myanmar aggressive bahavior in maritime dispute against Bangladesh. That goes to show two faced snake indians are. Unfortunately many Bangladeshis are not aware of india helping Myanmar against Bangladesh and Awami regime kept people in dark about indian activities.

You can always count on idune to deliver the punch line ..

I am glad that we won. :yahoo:All is now left is to take down India. Can any body tell when is the verdict on BD-India Maritime boundary
