The EADS corporation has decided to stop the development of the Talarion UAV, potentially opening an additional market for Israeli-produced UAVs
The European corporation EADS has decided to significantly decrease its investments in the development of the Talarion European UAV, a move that significantly increases the chances for the export of Israeli-produced UAVs to Europe.
An Israeli source stated, "Theyve understood that its not enough to have technical information, you need to know how to make the system operational, and thats the key trick." According to additional Israeli sources, the decision by EADS opens a considerable market for Israeli UAVs.
The development of the Talarion was the result of cooperation between the EADS corporation and the Turkish aeronautics industry. However, it encountered considerable difficulties, and the corporation decided several days ago to halt the project. However, the development of accompanying technologies will continue.
Louis Gallois, CEO of EADS, said several days ago that a country or two cannot afford the development of such a system themselves, and that there is need for a European UAV program, or Europe will continue to purchase UAVs from the United States and from Israel."
France and Germany are already operating Israeli UAVs produced by companies such as Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. Furthermore, the British Watchkeeper project is based on Elbit Systems' Hermes-450 UAV.
