Coinciding with India's plans to develop the strategically important Chabahar Port in Iran, the foreign minister of the country Ali Akbar Salehi will visit India on November 15.

Tehran has conveyed to New Delhi Salehi’s plans to attend Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) in Bangalore on November 15 and to hold discussions with his Indian counterpart SM Krishna on a host of issues, senior government officials told HT.

Chabahar port — 72 km from Pakistan's deep-sea Gwadar port built with Chinese assistance — holds immense strategic and economic significance for India.

New Delhi maintains the port is in the common interest of “India, Iran Afghanistan, as well as Central Asia”. Chabahar is also closer to India than the existing port at Bandar Abbas.

With a host of problems including the West's antagonism toward Iran, the development of the port, for which India and Iran are cooperating since 2003 has not been making desired progress, will be discussed. The US’s concern over the project has also been weighing on India's mind, which has more to do with Iran’s nuclear programme.

The need to speed up the port project was discussed at length at the joint commission between India and Iran last year. Now, India will be sending a technical team to Iran in a bid to speed up the work. According to sources, ministry of shipping had held a meeting recently in this regard.

Circumventing Pakistan, the port can serve as India's entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond. The port can be connected to the Zaranj-Delaram road in Afghanistan's Nimroz province, built with India’s assistance, via Milak.

India, Iran and Afghanistan have signed an agreement to give Indian goods, heading for Central Asia and Afghanistan, preferential treatment and tariff reductions at Chabahar.

About time! :smokin:

India and Afghanistan both badly need Chabahar to rid Afghans of Pakistani trap.

Afghanistan, here we come !

Excellent news india should help Iran to develop chabahar port ,as it is vital for india's Afghanistan 's policy & also very important trade route to central asia circumventing pakistan & it would help indian navy to lay foothold on strategic persian sea:enjoy:

Nothing gonna happen its like India Iran gas pipeline every time minister talk :blah: :blah::blah:

But in reality things don't move.

Its just because of a weak prime minister a US puppet.

Chabahar port + Gas + Oil from Iran can be real game changer.

It will be cheapest Oil/gas source for India and a link to Afghanistan's minerals + central asian markets.

A strong prime minister can tell USA that if USA can have ties with china/Pakistan we can also have with Iran otherwise china-pak nexus will benefit from and and our economy-defence will be at the receiving end.

Great news... been waiting for this for sometime now..

The best part is that now India and Afganistan will not have to depend on Pakistani land routs for trade.
Besides,if every thing goes well India may get a berthing right in Iran for IN subs and surface vecels. That would enable us to build a strong presence in strategic Percian gulf and our global position will be strenthened by a great margin.
Though it may be to early, still we should hope for the best and try hard.
REGARDS. . . .

Why are you indians kidding yourself. Let the isaf forces leave and we will see through which country goods are transported and who will have a greater influence in afghanistan admit it or not we will. So carry on dreaming

PS getting berthing rights in Chabahar and you will be saying hi to new neighbours in gwadar they are called the chinese. Then we'll see whether or not your position is strenghtened. But then again you guys always go on hissy fits so whining will continue in terms of why is china here, they shouldn't be here, they have nuclear subs next to us please international community get them out of the persion gulf.

Adios cry babies

Not at all but what stopped manmohans singh for going with the sea route or development of chabbar port???

My point is we need to take a stand according to the best interest of our people not dictated by any external power.
