I am seeing all this hype around Rafale on our national and regional TV news channels today...I am not an expert in military affairs.
I would like to know from experts here(pak or indian) that would Rafales have made a difference on feb 27 last year when pak jets entered india?would pak have dared to enter indian air space had we had rafales back then?
Would Rafales have succeeded in downing pakistani jets? Are we over exaggerating the importance of Rafales?are the jets which pak has now are good enough to fight rafales?
Please keep your answers confined to technicalities only..no trolling or india bashing plz

Yes, Rafale + Meteor would have given IAF total superiority over the PAF as long as they were used competently.

Anyway, what is the point of this what if?

I don't think it would have made any difference... Paf came with full force (around 30 jets) over a small contested area and we're faced by the few patrolling jets of iaf... Later MiG-21 and mki were scrambled to face it... Even then the ratio was like 8:1
So having Rafael based in Ambala would have taken much longer to reach the contested zone as the whole thing ended in few minutes...

Having said so... This was the case for a small contested zone... If we see the enlarge picture of this contest through whole LOC or IB then our mki would be a force to reckon with even without Rafaels

Depends on tactics etc MKI was a game changer in the region it didn’t do well in Indian hands. During war games USAF and others were disappointed in how they were used. It’s all about the man behind the machine and the first one to get the missile of the rails has an advantage in BVR warfare now.

Yes , but the hype it is getting is silly and ridiculous. Our media really overdid itself this time :disagree:

indian media is full of idiots , specially hindi tv , they do not update themselves and talk nonsense , they feed half cooked facts to masses which is equally fool.

So there is the "rub". Can the IAF use its new Rafales with sufficient competence? Are Indian pilots as good at flying an aircraft as are Pakistani pilots who fly a similar aircraft?

As a outside observer, it does seem to me that Pakistan gives much, much higher status to its military people and especially its fighter pilots. Therefore, probably Pakistani pilots are the among the most competent citizens of their society. Can the same be said for IAF pilots?

Rafale is an impressive fighter jet with a good radar...and meteor is among one of the best BVRs out there. Other things like Spectra...are hard to gauge...in terms of how effective it is. Information on it is scarce...and even more scarce are reports of it being effective in battlefield.

However one of the key things to note...is that in modern times...battles aren't dependent on this one fighter jet that's better or the one tank that's better...but rather many different systems working together. If u put out a few Rafales on their own...where they are detected at far longer ranges by enemy AWACS(having bigger and more powerful radars), facing jamming, air defense SAM systems(bcuz there are no accompanying SEAD assets), and enemy fighter jets(already in place...vectored ahead of time due to early detection by AWACS)...
...u can see how Rafales would walk into a situation that will turn out to be disastrous for them. So it all depends on how effectively IAF utilizes the Rafale. It wouldn't have mattered much if IAF had Rafales during Feb 2019...they had jets like Su30 MKI...which is also very potent...and yet they blew it...it would've turned out to be a similar outcome.

Yes. IMO, if IAF had Rafale, not just available last year, but fully operational, then it may well have outgunned the F16/AMRAAM and JF17/SD10 combos.

But that said, I'm sure PAF would have employed different tactics if Rafale was around - just look at how PAF waited for the IAF Netra to leave the area so the strike came as a surprise.

But that was then. We are in the now. It will take IAF some time to fully operationalise the Rafale and by then PAF would have Block 3 JF17s with PL15s. Its actually possible that PL15 is already with the PAF, and that some JF17s already have AESA radars.

Su 30mki is not as effective as it was 20years ago is totally due to our mod and iaf incompetence in upgrading it. Its upgradation should have started 5-10 years ago. Its not the platform that is to be blamed but the sheer mod/iaf/babus shortshightedness and redtapes. Paf is much better in improving their force with low budgets but our forces only wants new shiny foreign toys rather than supporting indigenous products and upgrading existing platforms.

yes you are right ,
our pilots were relaxing on 27th feb morning after a lot of work done on balakot madarsa for modi . only fools will sleep in the morning after striking enemy in the previous night .
any way now we should learn some lessons from feb 27 .

The way Indians have created their story, there cannot be any difference to that story despite inducting Rafael. And here it goes...
  • 350 killed
  • F-16 shot down
  • PAF missed all targets it shot
  • PAF didn't dare to enter Indian airspace.
Now which of these bullet points you think would change after "inducting Rafale"? The only change in Indian story can be Abhinandan came on Rafale instead of Mig-21 and exchanged it for a cup of tea. I reckon that will be a worse story from Indians standpoint. Would you agree? When your imagined story is so perfect, why and where would you change it?

@India
Since your story is intact, you can even afford to return Rafale back.
