Construction of Pak Navy's first MILGEM-class ship begins

June 04, 2020

The construction of Pakistan Navy's first MILGEM-class ship has started in Turkey.

The inaugural ceremony to this effect was held at Istanbul Naval Shipyard.

The state-of-the-art ship will be equipped with modern weaponry and sensors.

Under the transfer of technology agreement signed between Pakistan and Turkey, two of the four ships will be constructed at Karachi shipyard.

A spokesperson of Pakistan Navy said that the domestic construction of the ships will help promote shipbuilding industry.

The spokesperson said the construction of MILGEM-class ships reflects the strong bonds that exist between Pakistan and Turkey.

you don’t have budget to run large navy nor you’ve money to buy hardcore stuff ... period
The things you have on order right now you don't even have budget for these. And if India reaches a Navy with 100 Frigates and Destroyers and Corvettes and big patrol and Missile Boats than sorry you will have to make sure you have a Navy with around 24 to 30 Frigates and Destroyers and Corvettes plus Missile Boats. And around 20 Submarines. That will have to be there otherwise say goodbye to your freedom.

PN is more then doubling in size, that presents issues enough rather then thinking of even more boats. We are going from 8 major warships to 15 in a short period of time. Not taking into account AZMAT and tankers. We are adding an entire new fleet of MPAs in form of ATR to our air fleet, going from 7 planes to 11. From 5 major submarines to 11.

This will present challenges in basing, logistics, funding and of course enough trained manpower. PN Academy and sailor training bases will need to be massively expanded and all need instructors.

We will need to expand SSGN and Marines to help guard new facilities and of course develop and test new tactics and theories.

I think PN has enough on it's plate for now....

they have 460+ multirole 4-4.5 Gen fighters against your odd 36 BLK52 and BLK15 MLU ... you still have your freedom after 27 Feb. However, they’ve lost respect, humiliated and got massive criticism globally after there supa dupa mil might performance last year...

It took over 15 years for Turkey to build their own 4 x Ada class due to politics between private and naval shipyards and although this is a export order it should be free of such issues

I hope these are built at break neck speed and do not take anywhere near the length of the time those previous 4 took

Your Air Power difference is lowest it ever has been and Naval is biggest it ever has been. You simply can't afford to have 1/10 of Navy size compared to India

money was not there when we started nuclear program but leadership at that time showed commitment and involved in aggressive diplomacy for arranging funds from foreign nations particularly middle east, with current govt there is very little hope as they are not capable of this and lack political will and courage, they are more inclined towards pacifism and easy approach

what’s this from the video ?

This is Istanbul shipyard who is also building the I- class FFG

These days when the main block is lowered into the dry dock it’s called keel laying which this is

however what is that in the left, the 2nd Istanbul class? Or the first ?

It’s missing the bow section and and seems to advanced must be the 1st

I expect the launch of the first Istanbul class from this shipyard soon the keel for that was laid in Jan 2017 that’s over 3 years ago

we should have gone for I-class with 32 cell VLS

anyway that’s news

And the questions lingers on,, what exactly will be PAKISTAN'S Milgem Class boat!
Is it Ada Class Corvette OR the Istanbul Class Frigate?
As per the information available so far, it seems like Pakistan's Jinnah Class corvette will be something in between Turkish Milgem project Ada class corvettes and the Istanbul class frigates. The displacement closer to Ada class BUT with more weaponry!!
The authorities have unsurprisingly but frustratingly (for us people) been very tight lipped on this. Little will be reveleid and once the ship is delivered we will get to know better (even at that time more by looking at the images than official statements)

Another totally different information circulating around is that while the first two OR may be even three will be closer to Ada Class Corvettes (if not entirely similar) the fourth ship will be designed and built entirely in Pakistan (third one will be built in Pak too but this fourth one will be DESIGNED AND BUILT) and this fourth one will be a frigate (a modified Istanbul class frigate they say).

Now these are two different opinions, you can agree with either one of these of even disagree with both but that is about all that we know so far.

NOTE:
Another interesting and VERY IMPORTANT question will be, what ASW Helicopters is PN planning to used with these. Are we going to see more Z-9, will there be some interest in NH-60? Used Sea Kings or other similar platforms? Any considerations for Army and Air Force using AW-139 so something based on that? OR will we be stuck with the old existing fleet for time being.

Nice start but Pakistan needs much bigger Navy. Eventually on my opinion order of Type 54 A and MILGEM/Jinnah class will get doubled.
I hope 4 Type 052Ds are ordered next

We are adding an entire new fleet of MPAs in form of ATR to our air fleet,
LRMPA Project is in Pipeline

JF 17s??
