The typical cost of a home varies greatly from state to state.

We teamed up with Zillow to find the median home value of each of the 50 states in the US, in addition to Washington, DC. While there was some fluctuation from last year's numbers, the highest and lowest state medians are the same: West Virginia remains the cheapest with a median home value of $108,236, while Hawaii holds its position as the most expensive, with a median home value of $636,451.

For some states, this median value is heavily impacted by the typical cost of a starter home. Additionally, many states include notoriously expensive metro areas that contribute to higher averages, including California's many coastal cities and Washington's unaffordable Seattle neighborhoods due to the tech boom.

Using data from Zillow, Business Insider sorted states from lowest to highest median home value. We also noted each state's region size ranking, which represents how big it is population-wise; California is ranked No. 1 with the largest population of all states, while Wyoming is ranked No. 51 (the ranking includes Washington, DC). It's important to remember that these are the average home prices in each state, but what you get for that amount of money varies greatly from city to city, and even neighborhood to neighborhood.

Keep reading for a complete look at the typical home value for listings across the United States.

Another aspect of the USA system is that working people who have managed their credit responsibly can obtain 30-year mortgages for 90% of the purchase price up to ~ 4X their joint family income. The USA mortgage system is key to enabling home ownership to such a large percentage of the population, ~ 64%.

This is over all good for the business and the people. I don't know how this will come into play in Pakistan, where interest is haram. Maybe Islamic loans will be a good alternative.

Wow, house in the US is cheap.

In Sydney, the average house price is $1.2 Millions or $820,000 USD (house not apartment) and depending on suburb. You can pay 2 millions Australian Dollars for a broken and depilated houses in high earning suburb just for the land. In Penrith, house price is around 700,000 to 800,000, and that is the low end because it is around 70km from City CBD. Melbourne is slightly cheaper, it cost somewhere between 900,000 to 1 millions AUD. Then Brisbane, then Perth, then Adelaide, places like Hobart in the Tasmania is very cheap, still going to cost you an arm and a leg around $500,000 AUD per house

In Hong Kong, house is reserved for rich people. A 1 story house up in the hill cost around $20,000,000 HKD (around 2.6 millions USD), even a 300 square ft apartment, it will cost you around 7 millions HKD (~1 millions USD).

Interest is Haram? As in not allowed?

Yes, interest is not allowed in Islam.

I don't agree with this at all. I lived for the most part of my life in NYC and Long island. Right now i live in Nassau County Long island. I will say good luck getting a 4 bed and 2.5 bath here for 321,000. You are looking somewhere between 600,000-700,000 in good neighborhoods of Nassau and Suffolk country and if you want excellent neighborhood then its 800,000 and up. West Chester County just forget it property tax is a killer there.
The Houses in Long Island and West Chester country are expensive, but the real pain is the annual property taxes. having a Decent house in Nassau country Long Island you are looking at about 14000-16000 property taxes a year, now add mortgage to this with interest and maintenance well you are looking at big numbers.
Now the picture up there says house in Rochester NY. Well that's upstate NY and has nothing to do with Real NY which is New York City and the counties around it . In upstate NY you can get a beautiful house for 250,000. Buts its 6 Hours away from NYC. So do you really want to spend 250,000 there?

The cost of holding property in the US is expensive and has become more so in resent years. Chicago has the lowest property values relative to income of any major global city. That's because a $1 million home costs $30,000 a year just in property taxes. Home insurance is an additional $10,000. So $40,000 is needed (a typical after-tax wage in the city) just to hold a property even if you don't have a mortgage. Since the great recession property taxes in Chicago have doubled even as home values have declined.

That’s insane. You only pay $5000 in Boston for $1M house. In the suburbs it’s double that.

I think you are exaggerating a bit, my friend in New Jersey whose house value is about half mil pays $12000 in property taxes and NJ is one of the most heavily taxed state. It also varies from township to township so township with less commercial property the residential property taxes are higher. This is still very high as compared to Toronto where I pay about 3200 in taxes for house worth a mil
