Sheaf of paddy, election symbol of Bangladesh Nationalist Party

In the wake of its debacle in Sunday’s polls, Bangladesh Nationalist Party has convened an emergency meeting of the candidates who contested the 11th general election with its symbol the sheaf of paddy.

The meeting will be held at 10:00am on Thursday at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office, said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Earlier in the morning, an urgent message was sent to all the candidates of the sheaf of paddy from BNP’s Nayapaltan central office asking each of them to submit a report on eight issues, including election irregularities, vote rigging, arrest of agents and party leaders and activists and the unusual vote cast, with necessary documents to party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as soon as possible.

Besides, the candidates have been asked to include the video footages on election frauds, if they have, with their reports, a BNP assistant office secretary said wishing anonymity.

He said their party has taken the move to collect documents and information about vote rigging from every seat to submit those to the Election Commission and other important offices at home and abroad to reinforce their demand for re-election under a non-party administration.

On Monday night, Jatiya Oikya Front senior leaders, led by its convener Kamal Hossain, decided to submit a memorandum to the Election Commission demanding re-election under a non-party caretaker government cancelling Sunday’s general election.

An Oikya Front senior leader said all of their candidates may go to the Election Commission to submit the memorandum after their meeting at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday.

In Sunday’s parliamentary elections, BNP bagged only five seats while its alliance partner Gono Forum two.

I have learned that BNP is looking to challenge the validity of this election in the court. Will this do bear any fruit?
If the court fails to do the justice then foreign intervention will become necessary.

Court does not take account of talk claim. You need hard evidence and first apply in election commission and then election tribunal. It's very hard to substantiate rigging for entire election process.

Justice is necessary and people need to have the right to choose their leadership.

AL still has majority support.
If they did not then people will be out on the streets bringing down the government.

While I would have preferred a more free and fair election,
AL are the best way forward for BD right now. The general
population is not mature and educated enough for real democracy just yet.

Judiciary has already been compromised so I doubt it will have any effect.

I guess Army is the only one who could be the game-changer but they look totally indifferent to the situation.

AL destroyed the independence of the judiciary.
Army is tacitly putting up with AL as they are delivering on economic and military fronts.

Why would army risk their carrier and help BNP when BNP does not help themselves. Most of the BNP leaders are actually opportunist and the beneficiary of army rule.
