Peshawar, Pakistan: A group of militants entered the high security area near the US consulate in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Saturday, triggering a gun battle with security forces.

There was no official word on the incident, though TV news channels reported that the militants were holed up in the area near the US consulate, which is located within the Peshawar cantonment, and exchanging heavy fire with security forces.

The TV channels also reported that some militants had stormed a government building.

A large number of police personnel, including many in plainclothes, and army soldiers were deployed in the area. They blocked key roads and sealed off the area near Shama Chowk.

Helicopters were used to mount aerial surveillance of the area.

There was no word from authorities on whether there were any casualties in the attack.

This is the second attempt by militants to target the US consulate in Peshawar.

On April 5, militants armed with automatic weapons and suicide car bombs tried to storm the consulate, killing three persons. At least six attackers were gunned down or blew themselves up

PESHAWAR: Suspected militants attacked army buildings near the US consulate in Pakistan's northwestern capital Peshawar on Saturday, police said.

Police said a number of armed fighters tried to get into a secure area close to the consulate and army buildings early in the morning and that exchanges of fire between the attackers and security forces were continuing.

“There target is not clear but they were trying to reach a very sensitive area. There is the US consulate and army offices and buildings in that area,” Karim Khan, a senior police official in Peshawar, told AFP.

“The US consulate is completely safe,” he added.

Richard Snelsire, a spokesman for the US Embassy in Islamabad, told AFP he had “no information right now” on whether the consulate was the intended target.

Police said the army had sealed off the site of the attack, preventing anyone from entering, while intermittent gunfire continued.

An AFP reporter at the scene said army and police had blocked all the roads into the area while helicopters patrolled the skies.

Bashir Bilour, a provincial cabinet minister whose home is in front of the consulate, said: “The first round of firing continued for 30 minutes. I don't know what's going on but the army has sealed off the whole area and firing is still continuing.” “Soldiers have also entered my Hujra (Visitors compound). I cannot go outside,” he added. – AFP

This is a Turncated map of Defence... How the hell is US Embassy Near? Count the blocks. It's almost 3-4 blocks away.

Also here is a excrept from Dawn ticker:

Key words there " and army buildings"... We don't know who the target was, it was in defence, assuming they came from the rear end the US embassy is still far off, if they attempted form Airport Road (Impossible too many Check posts) and still embassy is far and if they attempted from Hospital Road that road is closed to anyone by Consulate traffic.

So...

so.....
one can assume maybe their intention was the us consulate but were sucessfully held up......since they alredy attacked it last april 5

According to sources, the attackers are holed up in nearby premises, which the law-enforcers have taken in their siege.

Also, the security forces have arrested three suspected people.

All the roads leading to the Cantonment area including Jamrud Road, Cantt and Airport Road, have been blocked for traffic.

Ambulances have been called in for any potential casualties. Following the incident, more contingents of the security personnel turned up in the area.

There are many sensitive offices in the area. US consulate is away from Intelligence agency building. The US consulate Spokesperson Richard could not confirm if it was aimed at the US consulate.

Anyway our reports are that Intelligence building was the target however it was thwarted. the terrorists are occupying a building in cantonment. Entire cantt is sealed.

Commando operation is said to be started anytime

I am seeing news in the Indian media (sorry Jana ji) that is quoting the Pakistan Police spokesman saying that its been ascertained that the consulate was not the target.

Thats what Paladain and i am saying. US consulate was not seemed to be the target as we have talked to its spokesperson he was not sure.

The US Consulate is 3 blocks away... That is not NEAR... That is "sensationalist" rubbish.

Its not rubbish. we have police special branch office, NLC and ISI offices. also , the army entred minister Bilour house which is so near.

by the way, its not good gesture to condemn every thing so bluntly. please, as a nation we need to be less pro sialkoti. if you know what i mean.

also, last time, no media mentioned that the miscreants were so effective that they broke the outer parameter, blew away an APC and blasted the interior of american consulate.

so nothing can be said. it might take SSG another 12 hour to nuetralise hostage situation.
