IAF Foresees Delays In Indo-Russian 5th Gen Fighter

Livefist - The Best of Indian Defence: IAF Foresees Delays In Indo-Russian 5th Gen Fighter

A senior officer of the Indian Air Force has said that India foresees "substantial delays" in the Indo-Russian Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) programme, with slippages that could run into a year or more for inductions into Indian service. The Indian Air Force plans to contract for 50 single-seat (prototype designated T-50) fighters and 200-250 twin-seat variants -- the latter will be built with Indian financial and technological involvement. More details soon.

Hey Benny - welcome back!

This delay is hardly a surprise. Now we must fastrack Tejas IOC and MMRCA contract should awarded at the earliest to compensate for the FGFA delay.

Hope the babus of MoD are listening.

We have been eagerly debating /waiting for the MMRCA deal to happen for such a long time.

Still confusion is in air about whether it goes to Europe or US.

US has been irking us lately with the recent visa fee and other remarks from obama. Hope if its a political decision that also comes into play and the best fighter wins.

A typical livefist report I would say, short enough to claim something without going into details like, what the reasons for these delays are and of course based on an unnamed official again.
The claim is, that FGFA program is delayed for 1 year maybe, but it does not say anything about if the Pak Fa program in general is delayed! If not and the intention is to buy 50 single seat Pak F a first, we will have these before the end of the decade, which would be more than a good time frame imo. The delay of 1 year for FGFA then, wouldn't be such a big problem, while inducting MMRCAs and Pak Fa at the same time and honestly, did someone of you really thought this NG development would not face delays when we see all the problem with F35? :)

If its just a delay of just one year, it would be a great news but its not realistic. I believe it would probably be a 5 year delay. Or potentially up to 10 years.

Any more predictions for today?? .. Please be free to say.

i red it some where that the delievries would start in 2015...

2020 or 2025. This bird is not hitting the scene significantly before the Chinese 5th Gen.

All we know about its current capability is that it flew and landed. That does not mean much in terms of its readiness.

I dont know how people jump into prediction mode for T-50 whose prototype has been seen flying.

The love for anything Chinese makes people predict that Chinese are better at everything and some even claim Chinese 3rd generation is western 4th generation and Chinese 4th generation is western 5th generation.

Maybe J-xx is the worlds first 6th generation by that claims.

I am waiting for a more accurate prediction maybe a date of launch.

Chinese 5 th Gen has nothing to do with topic don't know why it finds a mention on every PAKFA related thread.

for the bold part
At least we know it flew and landed but what do you know about Chinese 5th Gen apart from rumors? How can you claim that an imaginary bird will be ready around the same time frame as PAKFA? Its just a plain wishful thinking but even if I believe you that it will at least be able to fly by the time PAKFA is fully ready then how exactly its gonna help Pakistan remains a big question mark?

PAK FA is ready to execute a complete program of flight trials

The Sukhoi Company has completed the preliminary on-land and in-flight activities which involved all 3 engineering prototypes of the Frontline Aviation Advanced Airborne Complex (PAK FA) – the 5th-generation aircraft.

These prototypes were used for testbed strength tests, on-land optimization of fuel systems and other work towards flight trials. The flying prototype has made 16 flights. Today, the optimization of aircraft and its safety systems enables execution of a complete program of flight trials, announced the Director General of Sukhoi Mikhail Pogosyan today at the press conference at the Farnborough International Airshow-2010 Press Center.

The PAK FA took to the air on January 29 in Komsomolsk-na-Amure. The acceptance trials of the flying prototype were fully completed in late March. In April the first flying prototype of the fighter and the avionics testbed used for systems optimization before flight trials were delivered to the flying test center of the OKB Sukhoi Experimental Design Bureau in Zhukovsky near Moscow. Upon completion of the required on-bed preliminary tests of the systems, including the static example’s strength testing, on-land optimization of the avionics testbed and of the flying prototype, on April 29 the aircraft started preliminary tests.

Compared to the previous generation fighters, the PAK FA features a number of unique capabilities, including the functions of a strike aircraft and fighter. The fifth-generation aircraft is fitted with essentially new avionics integrating the function of “an electronic pilot” and with an advanced phased antenna array radar. This considerably reduces the pilot fatigue, enabling the pilot to concentrate on performance of a tactical mission. The new aircraft’s onboard equipment makes it possible to exchange information in the real time mode both with on-land control stations and with aviation group aircraft. The use of composite materials and innovative technologies, and the aerodynamic streamlining ensure unprecedented radar, optic and infrared stealthiness. This significantly enhances the operational capability against aerial and ground targets in all weathers, day and night.

Vladimir Popovkin, the Russian Defense Minister First Deputy, in his interview to the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper estimated the Russian Air Force’s demand for the 5th-generation fighters at 50 to 100 units. It is planned to complete all tests of the PAK FA airframe in 2011-2012, and to sign a contract in 2013 for a pilot lot of ten aircraft for testing the model’s entire weapons suite.

Sorry to find people on a defence forum lack the simple knowledge regarding the generation standard of China compare to the west, it had nothing to do for being superior or not, that just the way Chinese count their generations of fighter jets.

China (Shenyang) While the Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi is flight testing its T-50 PAKFA–the world is watching the tests very closely. Analysts are surprised that China too is testing its 5th generation aircraft (which it calls 4th generation). Beijing thinks that the F-22 is a 4th generation aircraft while the West considers it a 5th generation stealth fighter

I agree with you totally..
Its just that the counting and the standard practise of tagging the generation of a fighter aircraft are different in China and West.

5 is 4 in mandarin while its 5 itself in the rest of the world.

No worries.

I'll take Sukhoi's word over yours.

There are a number of pak-fa prototypes' in existance with a new prototype expected by the end of this year, people also forget that the pak-fa prototype was constructed well before it's test flight and that the SU-47, which flew more than a decade ago, was a test bed for the pak-fa; for instance, things such as weapons bays were first tested on the SU-47.

The pak-fa has also accomplished more then just a flight and landing, months back it was reported that the pak-fa has completed atleast 16 test flight, by now that number is much higher, and we can expect the frequency of test flights to rise since the earlier test flights were conducted with much caution.

Also if you beleive the pak-fa will not enter service until 2020-2025 then the it's only fair to assume that the j-xx will not enter service before 2030-2035.
