Iraq’s newly arrived T-90S tanks have been delivered to units that previously operated M1A1 Abrams tanks.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the decision to swap the US-made tanks for Russian ones on 6 June, saying 39 T-90S tanks had been handed over to the 35th Brigade of the 9th Armoured Division to equip two battalions. It said the units’ officers and crews had been retrained with Russian assistance and their Abrams tanks transferred to the division’s 34th Brigade.

The 34th Brigade has been seen operating T-72s, the tank from which the T-90S was developed.

It was confirmed in 2017 that Iraq had ordered 73 tanks in the basic T-90S standard and the associated T-90SK command variant. The Iraqi MoD announced in February 2018 that 36 had been delivered.

Also russian weapons are rugged, easier to operate & maintain compared to western weapon systems which need to be maintained like a expensive car.

It's a bit perplexing how this nonsense continues to be bandied around the internet. The Abrams has proven perfectly reliable in every environment its been put into.

One of the reasons why Pakistan rejected this tank multiple times as recent as 2007...They r not suitable for desert warfare.

A tank that has had successful tours in desert environments across the Middle East and continues to serve in multiple nations with desert environments is not suitable for desert warfare?

It's not a question of "suitable" but logistics and expense. The US Army defeated Russian equipped Iraqi Army in two wars in the desert and in the last one invaded the country in a armoured thrust right across the Saudi/Iraqi deserts to reach Baghdad in ten days.

The tip of the 'Desert Storm' was Abrams.

The fact of the matter is U.S is not willing to share the same armour it uses on its Abram to others so basically you're getting a lemon. A fancy and scary looking lemon.

A lemon that has consistently stood up to modern atgm threats in Iraq?

Even without the added protection of DU or reactive armour the M1 is the most survivable of any tank in the Iraqi inventory. Over the past five years around five (5) of the 140 Iraqi Abrams were penetrated/total losses.

You're chatting out of your arse about something you have zero clue about. It's not an invincible tank (no tank is).

I don't see other countries lining up their tanks to take Kornets to their sides. So maybe they're the ones with the fancy scary looking lemons.

yes it isnt....these Abraham's and their performance is a testimony for that. Its just that u havnt used the in battlefield in desert environment yet....In desert warfare, a rugged, agile n light to medium weight tank is most successful as seen in WW2....Thats why now many r preferring Russian medium weight tanks, which also simple to operate n r rugged too.

American weaponry isnt made suitable for desert warfare, we learnt it in the hard way in 1965 war with our Patton tanks....Thats why since then no American/european tank has ever seen service in Pakistan. U will also learn it the hard way in Egypt with yr Abram's in any of the next war.

Which Tank ???
M1A1 or A2 in 2007.

There was nothing wrong with Patton. It was Pakstan Army failures at strategic and tactical level. For instance the crews had problem in operating the new optical sights. In addition there were often too few infantry to cover the tanks.

That is true but just like how US technology prevailed in the sky it prevailed on the ground. In one on one encounters between US tanks and Iraqi tanks the former shredded the Iraqis.

Iraq's Abrams tank performed well in the war against IS eventually after proper deployment, it's a good tank the only problem they saw with it is its engine type and high maintenance cost for US contractors.

The reference was to the Islamic State-held town of Hit in Anbar province, just north of Ramadi, where the Beast has made its name as part of a largely successful Iraqi military push to reclaim the city.

While Warren said he wasn’t claiming the tank crew is driving around.. the tank has apparently become a little bit of a folk hero in Iraq, with the Iraqi Twittersphere coming up with its nickname. The Beast has been so active that Warren said U.S. advisors watching the battle thought that there was more than one tank out there “tearin’ it up.” Initially, three Iraqi Army Abrams tanks were sent to the fight in Hit, but two broke down, leaving just one to clash with Islamic State holdouts.

We also learned Wednesday that the Americans give out a “Hero of the Day” award to Iraqi troops fighting in Hit and that the Beast’s crew took home the award for several days running.
