Left Front's Manik Sarkar has ruled Tripura for four consecutive terms.

Story Highlights

  • BJP dethrones Manik Sarkar-led Left government in Tripura
  • Manik Sarkar was chief minister for four consecutive terms
  • Himanta Biswa, former Congressman, is BJP's main strategist in Northeast
Agartala: Himanta Biswa Sarma, former Congressman and now the ruling BJP's main strategist in the northeast, has suggested that Manik Sarkar, who will soon be resigning from Tripura chief minister's post, can seek shelter either in West Bengal, neighbouring Bangladesh or the southern state of Kerala. The BJP stormed Tripura today and dethroned Manik Sarkar-led Left government that has been in power for more than two decades.

The 69-year-old chief minister has governed Tripura since 1998. He is a politburo member of CPI-M and ruled the state for four consecutive terms.

"Manik Sarkar has just three options before him. He can go to West Bengal, where the CPI-M still has some presence. He can go to Kerala, where the party is in power and will rule for three more years or he can go to neighbouring Bangladesh," Mr Sarma said.

The BJP leader had earlier kicked up a row during an election rally in Dhanpur, Manik Sarkar's constituency, by reportedly suggesting that the Tripura chief minister would be sent to Bangladesh after the assembly elections. He also criticised his government over the alleged deteriorating law and order situation and cross-border crimes.

The BJP, along with its regional ally the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), stormed to power with 43 seats in Tripura. Whereas the CPM got just 16. Tripura has 60 assembly seats and a party needs 31 to form the government.

For a long time after counting began this morning, the Left and the BJP were locked in a close fight. As the BJP roared ahead, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted, "CPM Tripura fort to crumble in next 1 hour."

Another BJP leader called it a "historic verdict" for Tripura. "CPM gave a spirited fight but people have voted for poriborton, accepted our slogan of 'Chalo Paltai' (let's change)," senior BJP leader Ram Madhav told reporters.

BJP workers moved to Agartala streets to celebrate the grand win. 48-year-old Biplab Kumar Dev, Tripura BJP chief, is emerging as the BJP's top pick for the chief minister's post.

Elections in 59 seats were held on February 18. Election in one seat was cancelled due to the death of a CPI-M candidate.

Kerala will be first Muslim majority state in India.:tsk:
You see, in India, the religion of the population doesn't matter. Our constitution wasn't based to place any particular group above another. You must have us confused with Pakistan.

Tell that to the 2000 Muslims murdered by Hindus in 2002 Gujarat, with the support of police and state government.

We told them that, but the people of Gujarat have been electing the same Hindus. Even from Muslim majority areas. Until recently.

I pity Indian Muslims for their predicament in India.
Maybe you are not that bad as South Indian Hindus are more tolerant, but in North India Muslims have been murdered on suspicion of transporting beef.

Yes,
Not quite. They were given fair chance to deal with that. They were given multiple opportunities. (I'm talking about Gujarati Muslim). All the time, they failed to fit in the usual narrative of oppressed Muslim. Rather, what I see is, they decide to put that behind and move forward. At least for the past 16 years, there was no riot, but fast pace industrial development.

And there are nearly 200 million Muslims in India. It's far higher number than in BD. So, if there was some mass genocide happening it will be evident to some extent. One or two murders don't represent the entire state of affairs. If I were you, I wouldn't call all BD people in the US as ISIS wannabe based on a subway bombing. Similarly, every Hindu in India as extremist hot heads based on some incidents.

Mass murder of minorities on a regular basis is not "some incidents".

Another bastion of leftists lost in India. Last remaining is in Kerala. CIA and Indian central govt working long to quell leftist politics from India. Their state level politicians maybe modest in nature in India. But in BD we know how much menace these people are. Maybe Indian outlawed groups like Naxalites types are mainstream in BD. Only kill, kill, kill and Andolon disaster is their motto. I wish these people should just perish from BD's media background to spread less propaganda. Another thing is during not so friendly BNP regime, all friendly political parties spreaded their tentacles around BD. Now during all out India friendly regime, BD is getting surrounded by anti BD sentiment parties. Food for thought. These guys lost their proper jobs and now their heads are filled with Satanic ideas.

Nobody in here gives a damn about what a BD says. And speaking of mass murder, I think first you need to stand up to your own mass murders that happened in History rather than spending time, saving ummah.

Former CM of Tripura,Manik Sarkar is an actual Hindu refugee from what is now Bangladesh

India was never a land of leftist politics or communists for that matter. The congress and will be the leader of the center left politics in India.

That's why they failed to gain any momentum. As for Kerala, there is no Communist values in the CPI(M) of Kerala. But a skeleton of what was communism.
