UAE distributes 20,000 food baskets

Distribution of food aid to displaced families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province

In implementing the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan (UAE PAP) has distributed 20,000 food baskets among displaced families in Durrani and Tirah Valley camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

The distribution has been overseen by the project’s field team in cooperation with the Pakistani Army, local governments in the province and representatives of international organisations.

The management of the UAE PAP has indicated that the distribution of food aid comes in implementation of the directives of Shaikh Khalifa to provide humanitarian and food assistance for displaced Pakistanis in these areas to alleviate their suffering and dire conditions, especially in northwestern Pakistan, where people are suffering from the bitter cold, poor health care and food shortage while living in temporary tents.

It also revealed that UAE PAP has prepared and distributed over 1,600 tonnes of food aid among the displaced families. The food items include flour, rice, sugar, salt, lentils, cooking oil and tea weighing 80kg per family.

On their part, the beneficiaries expressed their appreciation and thanks to Shaikh Khalifa for his initiatives to provide food aid for their families. They also praised the generosity which aims to alleviate their suffering, wishing Shaikh Khalifa good health as well as peace and security for the UAE for the provision of humanitarian aid.

Mansour bin Zayed directs distribution of "Spirit of Solidarity" to students

In implementation of the directives of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, the management of the U.A.E.'s project to help Pakistan, UAEPAP, announced the allocation of 5,000 copies of the book "The Spirit of Solidarity" to be distributed to schools, public and private universities in the country.

The project management explained that the purpose of the distribution of the book is to raise awareness in students of the efforts and initiatives of the humanitarian and development projects carried out by the U.A.E. under the guidance of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to assist Pakistan.

The project management said in a statement today that the wise directives of the President had resulted in the implementation of several humanitarian projects and successful developments in many fields, including the building of new roads, bridges, educational establishments, and projects aimed at improving health, water and food distribution and implementation of vaccination campaigns, as well as the provision of school bags for underprivileged students. These initiatives have changed and affected the lives of the people in those areas in a positive way and showed a distinct value and importance of all humanitarian efforts provided by the generous leadership and the people of the U.A.E. for those in need.

The management of the project stated that the directives of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan to distribute "The Spirit of Solidarity" to schools and universities comes within the framework of his keenness to raise awareness in the young students of the U.A.E. of the work and projects for humanitarian needs carried out by the U.A.E. to help people in sisterly and friendly countries.

These books are being distributed in UAE at the moment to UAE students.

They are also helping in setting up many health and educational institutions in Pakistan and also in building infrastructure many of which are up and running.

124 projects completed by UAE-PAP in Malakand

Thursday, April 03, 2014 - Islamabad—With the resilience of the people of Malakand Division and FATA providing the impetus for reconstruction and rehabilitation of a region mired by man-made conflicts and natural disasters, 124 social sector projects worth US $50 million have been completed in the area as part of what can be described as the beginning of a silent revolution holding the promise of prosperity for the region.

What may seem like an overnight phenomenon, given that the projects have been completed without the lust for media limelight, actually teed off in September 2010, when 45 Engineers Division on behalf of Pakistan Army, and the UAE Embassy through the UAE Pakistan Assistance Program (UPAP), undertook the construction of 53 educational, 7 health sector, and 64 water supply schemes in the region.

Initiated with the motto ‘Peace through Sustained Development’ under the umbrella of Quick Impact Projects (QIPs), the initiative will be replicated to include all agencies of FATA and distant areas of Malakand Division like Upper Dir and Chitral. The obvious benefits of establishing schools and health facilities, and enabling access to clean drinking water notwithstanding, the initiative has also paid huge dividends by generating considerable economic activity in the region.

For one, it helped inject almost Rs 3.8 billion into the local market and industry as most of the construction material and labour for the said projects was hired from the local market. Secondly, it has encouraged local businessmen and industrialists to re-establish their work during the conflict, resulting in opening up of employment opportunities for labour. In the education sector alone, 53 institutions have been built in a record two years time in district Swat, Buner, Lower Dir, Bajaur, and South Waziristan Agency. This was a huge undertaking in a region where extremists not only destroyed over 200 educational institutions but also imposed a ban on education of girls. Studies established that over 70% of boys and girls were either out of school or were studying in ‘madrassas’ run by uneducated clerics.

Funds worth Rs. 2.3 billion, making 54% of the total share were allocated to the education sector for construction of state-of-the-art schools and colleges for girls and boys, as well as two technical and vocational institutes and two cadet colleges. Over 2,600 strong labour forces from these areas were employed for two years for construction of these institutions. Well over 290 villages have and will keep benefitting from these education facilities. Every year, over 2,500 students will pass out from these institutions.

In the health sector, 7 signatory projects are being completed in Malakand Division and FATA, leading to the addition of 330 hospital beds, which will improve the existing patient-to-bed ratio by 4% in Swat and 13% in FATA. As many as 125 doctors and specialists will be employed in these hospitals, which will benefit 4.4 million people. About 61 villages in the far-flung areas of FATA and Malakand will depend on these facilities. The paramedic institute in Saidu Sharif will train 300 young men and women as paramedics every year to work in these areas. The recently completed 70-bed ‘Category A Agency Hospital’ in Khar is the first-ever modern hospital in Bajaur Agency; it is equipped with latest electro-medical equipment and has separate hostels for boys and girls. Another hospital that has been completed is the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Model Hospital, Saidu Sharif, a 100-bedded maternity and pediatric hospital laced with modern facilities. Among ongoing projects is the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Model Hospital, Sholam, (SWA), which is being constructed near Wana. Both hospitals will be equipped with modern dialysis and diagnostic equipment, OTs, blood banks, burn wards and ICUs. Such facilities never existed in these areas.

Aside from the construction of 17 girls schools and colleges, a vocational training centre has been set up in Mingora, and another 38 centres are in the pipeline of UPAP’s future project phase. These centres, which will impart quality technical and professional training through latest gadgetries, will economically empower talented women to stand on their own feet. Moving on, the College of Technology established in Khar, Bajaur Agency, has provided an opportunity for youth to get cutting-edge technical education in the field of mechanical, electrical, civil and mining technologies. Similarly, the establishment of Cadet Colleges in Warsak and Wana, which is seen as ‘a dream project’ by the local community, will open up new avenues of learning for young boys in FATA. Over 800 cadets will initially study in these colleges; 70% of them from FATA. —PR

UAE pledges Dh1.3b relief aid to Syria

Second international donors’ conference raised one-third of money needed, UN says

The UAE has pledged $360 million (Dh1.3 billion) to support Syrian relief efforts to help alleviate the plight of millions of Syrians caught in the country’s three-year war, Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development, said yesterday.

“Out of the UAE’s donations offered in the last two international donor conferences, $110 million has already been spent,” Shaikha Lubna told a news conference held at the ministry’s headquarters.

Speaking of the break-up of the second tranche of UAE’s relief aid of $60 million pledged during the second international donor conference, held in Kuwait in January, Shaikha Lubna said $50 million will be allocated for meeting the needs of internally displaced Syrians, while the remaining amount of $10 million will be for Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries.

Some $20 million will be allocated for the World Food Programme, to meet food security needs of the internally displaced people and $15 million will be allotted for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, in response to food security needs of the Palestinian refugees inside Syria, according to Shaikha Lubna.

Shaikha Lubna said $13 million will be offered to Unicef and the World Food Programme to meet the nutrition needs of children under five years old and pregnant and nursing women.

One million dollars will be offered to the World Health Organisation in response to health-care requirement of the internally displaced Syrians, and another million dollars will be granted to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Of the $10 million relief aid for Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries, $5 million will be offered to the World Food Programme to meet food security needs, $3 million for water and sanitation projects and $2 million to meet health-care requirements.

GCC and Western states have pledged more than $2.4 billion in emergency aid to help alleviate the plight of millions of Syrians caught in the country’s three-year war.

The second international donor conference raised one-third of the $6.5 billion the UN says is needed this year to meet the growing humanitarian crisis.

UN statistics put the number of Syrian refugees at 2.6 million in neighbouring countries, with more than nine million in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

The World Food Programme said it is concerned that up to 6.5 million people inside Syria might be severely food insecure and cannot afford to buy food due to the conflict.

The UN agency is appealing for close to $2 billion to assist over seven million Syrians in urgent need of food assistance in 2014. These include 4.25 million people inside Syria and over 2.9 million refugees in neighbouring countries.

The UAE is one of the first countries that responded to the Syrian crisis, as it provided humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees in the neighbouring countries, such as Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, in addition to internally displaced persons (IDP) over the last two years.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, told a Cabinet meeting on Monday the UAE’s participation in development and relief efforts around the world is a permanent element of the country’s diplomacy that future generations will inherit with pride and appreciation.

The UN World Food Programme welcomed a generous contribution of $31 million from the Government of the UAE towards its emergency humanitarian operations in Syria. “We are very grateful for this extremely timely contribution from the UAE Government. For WFP, this funding comes at a critical time, as we work to meet the ongoing food assistance needs of nearly 7 million Syrians who have been worn down by the three-year conflict,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.

Last month, a lack of funding forced WFP to reduce by 20 per cent the March food basket provided to vulnerable families inside Syria. As a result, families did not receive sufficient nutrients to stay healthy (1,530 kilocalories, compared with the planned 1,920 kilocalories.)

The UAE donation will allow WFP to continue to provide food assistance to vulnerable people impacted by the conflict. “This significant investment demonstrates the generosity of the UAE and its people as they lead by example, shouldering the burden of a crisis that has gone beyond the borders of Syria. Your support also reflects humanitarian solidarity with the countries hosting refugees. You are saving lives of innocent children, vulnerable men and women,” Cousin said. WFP has appealed for $2 billion to feed around 7 million Syrians displaced in their country or have fled to neighbouring countries.

MASHA ALLAH. I think OIC should bring in agenda on the table to discuss the syrian issue and also talk to NATO to supply their old 80s and 90s weapons to them in order to make them secure.

UAE Project opens Jahanzeb College


UAE Project to Assist Pakistan inaugurates re-constructed Jahanzeb Post Graduate Degree College

Under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to support Pakistan’s educational system, the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan has officially inaugurated the Jahanzeb Post Graduate Degree College (JPC), the oldest educational institution in Malakand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, marking the completion of the reconstruction of the institution at a cost of $1.209 million.

The UAE Project to Assist Pakistan (UAE. PAP), in collaboration with Pakistan Army, reconstructed JPC, which was established in 1952 to grant degrees in 7 disciplines, and it accommodates 300 students. JPC was rebuilt on an area of 3,577 square meters to house modern academic departments. The facility has a main lecture auditorium, 10 classrooms, 4 laboratories, 16 teaching and administrative staff offices and an administration building.

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, General Raheel Sharif, Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army (COAS) thanked Shaikh Khalifa for his constant support for Pakistan through his generous humanitarian initiatives which have their focus on human development and contribute to efforts to boost several sectors such as education, healthcare, water, transport and road networks.

He affirmed that the people of Pakistan will always remain grateful for the genuine humanitarian attitudes of Shaikh Khalifa who spares no efforts to support the humanitarian causes of the people of Pakistan at times of crisis.

The initiatives of Shaikh Khalifa, added General Sharif, contributed to the development of areas hit by earthquakes and floods and backed the Pakistani government’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of the poor and the underprivileged.

For his part, Eisa Abdullah Al Basha Al Nuaimi, UAE Ambassador to Pakistan, hailed the humanitarian approach of the UAE under the leadership of Shaikh Khalifa which aims at giving support to fraternal and friendly countries through development projects in sectors such as education, healthcare, transport, water and others.
