A staggering 10Tbps

CHINESE ELECTRONICS FIRM ZTE has announced a record breaking data transmission of 10Tbps over 640km of single-mode fibre optic cable.

The experiment was based around ZTE's patented "carrier generation technology" that uses 112 lasers to make up a single-channel total rate of 11.2Tbps. This boils down to 10Tbps because of overheads such as forward error correction.

Single-mode fibre optical cable is designed to carry a single ray of light along its length at a time.

The results of the experimental test transmission were recently presented at Optical Fibre Communication/National Fibre Optic Engineers (OFC/NFOE) conference recently held in Los Angeles. ZTE claims that the transfer rate is equivalent to sending 160 HD movies per second.

The article was accepted as a "post-deadline paper", with ZTE being the primary company involved in achieving the result. ZTE said, "Post-deadline papers are the most competitive papers and reports and are the core of the OFC/NFOE conference."

ZTE claimed, "With rapid growth in demand for higher bandwidth, single channel 10Tbps will be the transmission rate for future telecommunication networks."

The rate is 100,000 times faster than the currently fastest broadband in the UK, although ZTE pointed out that the technology is not intended for the transmission of Internet traffic to the home.µ
