Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jun spoke of the trade concession at a function in Dhaka

China is considering to widen zero-tariff access of Bangladeshi products to its market as bilateral trade between the two partners growing rapidly in the recent years.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jun spoke of the trade concession his country is planning to help further boost Bangladesh export to China at a function in Dhaka on Sunday, marking China’s founding anniversary.

“We’re working to increase the zero-tariff treatment for Bangladesh goods from the existing 65% to 97%,” he said. The bilateral trade volume reached $4.2bn, an increase of over 30% compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The envoy gave the update days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York on Tuesday assured Bangladesh of increasing the duty-free access of Bangladeshi products to its market up to 95%.

“China will continue to exert more efforts in pushing forward our all-dimensional bilateral cooperation,” Jun said.

He called upon all Bangladeshi friends to continue to join hands with China and make unremitting endeavours for the wellbeing of the two peoples, for the prosperity of the two countries, and for the peace and development of the world.

“Currently, our economic and trade cooperation is facing unprecedented opportunities. As China transforms and upgrades its economic structure, Bangladesh is also implementing the policies of Vision 2021 and Digital Bangladesh. The two countries will illuminate each other and constitute positive interaction to achieve common development.”

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Industries Minister Dilip Barua, Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu, Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad, Communist Party of Bangladesh President Muzahidul Islam Selim, among others, spoke at the function.

Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, News Today Editor Reazuddin Ahmed, columnist Syed Abul Maksud and political leaders were also present.

Matia sought Chinese support in water management, rainwater harvesting and its efficient utilisation, and joint ventures in manufacturing farm machinery, including water management equipment, reports UNB.

She said China could help Bangladesh through exchange of researchers, scientists and knowledge sharing apart from providing modern technological support for the modernisation of the country’s agriculture sector and boosting its productivity.

“We consider China as our trusted development partner. We hope China would be our best partner in agricultural cooperation,” Matia said. The Agriculture Minister also expressed her hope that China will assist Bangladesh in weather forecasting and building rubber dams for sustainable agriculture.

Dilip Barua said sitting in between two emerging economic blocks Asean on the east and Saarc on the west, Bangladesh holds great potential for itself as well as its neighbours.

“We also aim to rebuild a sense of community among the historic neighbours the railway and road link from Chittagong to Kunming and deep-sea port in Sonadia Island have thus become a compelling necessity,” he added.
