RAWALPINDI – British Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon called on Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif and Defence Secretary Alam Khattak here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Asif said Pakistan and UK considered each other close friends and development partners. “Pakistan has a strong Diaspora in UK and likewise there is a great number of British national living in Pakistan, who are serving as a bridge between the two countries,” he added.

He said the frequent visit of high official from UK - including British Prime Minister David Cameron - was a testimony of special relationship between UK and Pakistan. He pointed out that these frequent interactions between UK and Pakistan had paved the way for “coordinating our approaches to various bilateral regional and international issues”.

The defence minister said that progress had been made through the ongoing Pak-UK enhanced Strategic Dialogue, which covered the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The meeting also discussed reconciliation process in Afghanistan and the positive role of regional players.

Fallon appreciated the success of operation Zarb-e-Azab. “This has helped stabilise the region and not just Pakistan,” he said. Khawaja Asif highlighted the sacrifices rendered by the armed forces and the people of Pakistan against the war on terror.

He mentioned that Pakistan had provided multifaceted support to the international community in the war on terror. He informed that the Pakistan Navy had also joined the US-led multi-nation task forces 150 and 151 to combat piracy in Gulf of Aden/Horn of Africa.

The minister also pointed out that Pakistan was trying its best to normalise its relations with its neighboring countries. However, he said, the resolution of outstanding issues was essential. The overall security situation of the region and the country were extensively discussed.

“Pakistan is a member of common wealth and therefore attaches great importance to its deep-rooted relations with the UK,” Asif said. Both sides agreed that a forum on defence cooperation other than defence consultative forum should be put in place for further cooperation in areas of defence.

Did he explain why UK is a refuge of choice for all tier-2 terrorists Pakistan wants?
