New Delhi: Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh have unleashed a social media storm by backing former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s foundation in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The two countries are bitter rivals and the move touched a raw nerve in India.

Afridi’s appeal for donations to help people affected by the deadly virus in Pakistan has had overwhelming support from leading cricketers

Harbhajan urged people to contribute in a video message, and called on other cricketers in the two countries to make similar appeals.

These are testing times, it’s time to look out for each other,” Yuvraj wrote on Twitter in a call for funds.

While Afridi thanked the two, Indian Twitter users reacted with fury at the support for a rival player who has been a vocal critic of India’s handling of the Kashmir dispute.

Twitteratis react
“Do you have any sense?” wrote one Twitter user.

“Lost respect” for Harbhajan Singh, added another.

“Sorry guys you lost it.”

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral cricket series since 2012-2013 and have seen a new peak in tensions over Kashmir, which has been at the centre of two wars between the neighbours since 1947.

Kashmir
Kashmir has been divided between the two since their independence seven decades ago and India frequently accuses Pakistan of organising “terrorism” on its side of the border.

World Cup-winning batsman Yuvraj, who made a return from cancer before finally retiring last year, has also raised money to fight coronavirus through his ‘YouWeCan’ foundation.

India, which has been under a 21-day lockdown since March 24, has so far confirmed more than 1,600 coronavirus cases and 38 deaths.

Pathetic mindset. I do not understand that when hell on Earth Indian obsession with Pakistan be finished. These two cricketers were only supporting Shahid Afridi for his contribution towards humanity, these twitterian Indian extremists have lost their respect.

Meh

Indian People react to Afridi because, he made many statements against India which is beyond sports..If the same kind of appeal would have been made by Imran Khan or Shoib Akthar..things could have been different....

Goes to show that the creation of Pakistan is etched in and still burns at the very soul of every indian. Pakistanis could not care less that bangladesh is no longer a part of the Pakistani federation but indians still feel the pain of having lost the Pakistani territory. It hurts, haunts and still disturbs them, 73 years later. If it didn't, indians wouldn't be so obsessively anti-Pakistani or anti-Muslim.

So Indians proving it right what Afridi has said about Indians, when they could have proved it wrong.

Afridi I remember in one occasion also told a young Indian to hold the Indian flag upright before shooting a video....he is an open minded, bighearted fella.

Of course I agree...he emotional, big hearted and nice person..He is very nationalistic towards his own country...But there are several examples where he has taken political stand for certain issues. So that does not go well with some Indian..

Yes, you are correct...We are a hypocrite on this occasion...We admire him for anything that sounds right for us...But criticize him that does not suit our interest, even if it is not entirely directed for Indian...

Apparently Hinduism doesn't teach humanity..

You have every right to criticize and use harsh words for those people who are involved in criticizing Afridi in social media. This is the exact kind of generalization which is not good...How come Indian people reacting to Afridi is a barometer for humanity in Hinduism? And how come your statement is not anything different when people tag all Muslims in -ve image...
