Younis triple century leads Pakistan to safety KARACHI: Younis Khan scored a triple century to help Pakistan to 547 for five after tea on the fourth day of the first test against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, ensuring that they would avoid the follow-on.
The Pakistan captain had put the match on the road to a draw with an unbroken fifth wicket stand.
Sri Lanka, who amassed 644 for seven declared in their innings, had their bowlers frustrated by a pitch getting flatter by the day.
Younis, 31 and playing in his 59th test, also passed the 5,000 test run milestone in the session, becoming the fastest of five Pakistanis to reach the mark by surpassing Javed Miandad's record of 65 matches.
The right-hander's double hundred matched that of his Sri Lankan counterpart, Mahela Jayawardene, who hit 240 in the tourists' innings.
Younis had batted for 611 minutes by tea and never looked like giving up his wicket in the second session. His 451-ball innings has included 24 fours and two sixes so far.
He reached his double hundred by driving Dilhara Fernando for three runs through the cover
