YAZIDI GENOCIDE SURVIVOR: 'JEWS ARE AN EXAMPLE FOR US'

BY NOA AMOUYAL
JULY 23, 2017 21:34

In Israel for the first time, Yazidi genocide survivor Nadia Murad Basee explains why her experience and Jewish suffering during the Holocaust are intertwined.

You don't need to know Kurdish to understand the sadness that has seeped into Nadia Murad's soul. In August 2014 Murad was captured by ISIS in her village of Kocho, Iraq and sold into sex slavery where she witnessed unspeakable atrocities. Today she is a Yazidi refugee. She is one of 5,200 Yazidi people abducted by Islamic State in Iraq whose lives were torn apart because religious extremists saw them as "kafir" or "nonbelievers." Her dreams of being a teacher were destroyed in an instant three years ago, when ISIS tore through her town, murdered six of her brothers and held her captive for months. Her captor's failing to lock a door was her gateway to freedom, as she escaped, found her way to a refugee camp and now is one of more than a thousand Yazidis who were accepted into a refugee asylum program in Germany.

Murad's, bravery in telling her experiences to international audiences all over the world is extraordinary.

She was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations last year as an advocate for her people and is explaining to the world that the crimes waged against them must not go unpunished.

With the help of organizations like IsraAID, which she calls "more functional than many governments,” and Yazda, a non-profit formed to help victims of genocide, she has been able to able to tell her story to a global audience. For Murad, the parallels between the Yazidi experience and the Jewish one in Europe 70 years ago are striking.

"We think our case is relevant to what they have been through in the Holocaust. It's the thing we are going through," Murad told The Jerusalem Post via a translator, late last week in Tel Aviv. "We think they'll understand our case more than anybody else. We have been in many countries, meeting with governments for help for the Yazidi communities. I always wanted to come here to Israel, a lot of victims wanted to come and ask for help from the government and people of Israel." With the aid of human rights relief organizations mentioned above as well as Knesset member Ksenia Svetlova who is hosting a conference at the Knesset on Monday in remembrance of the genocide, Murad is here to raise awareness about what was done to her community.

Her public advocacy stops around the country includes visits to Yad Vashem, speaking to a delegation of young professional women hosted by the American Jewish Committee and speaking at Beit Hatfutsot in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.

In many ways, Jewish resilience after the Holocaust has served as a beacon of hope for the people whose lives have been torn apart since the rise of ISIS three years ago, Murad argues. In August 2014 several hundred thousand Yazidis fled their towns and villages in northern Iraq, many ending up living in displaced person’s camps in the Kurdistan Region. Thousands were murdered by ISIS and buried in forty mass graves in scenes similar to those of the Holocaust from 1941-42 as Germany’s Einsatzgruppen death squads slaughtered Jews in the Soviet Union.

Murad, like many people in her community, is eager to learn from Israel to see how Jews were able to build anew after such devastation.

"Before this genocide, I had little information on the Jewish community because we don't have many Jewish people in Iraq," she explained. "I had zero knowledge about the community until I started this campaign and saw Jewish communities support us.” As an example, she recalls a transformative meeting with the grandmother of Nikki Marczak, Deputy Director, Nadia's Initiative who was a Holocaust survivor.

It was just one of many stops Nadia took in the country as part of her work advocating for the recognition of Yazidi genocide.

"While in Australia on a Yazidi genocide tour, Nikki took me to meet her grandmother, to see their resilience and how they rebuild their communities. Their ability to stay to stay strong and keep their culture...it's an example. I personally fell in love with doing that. The Jews are an example. We should do the same," she said.

Yotam Polizer, Co-Chief Executive Officer of IsraAID agrees with that assessment. He recalled working in Greek refugee camps where Yazidis would often come to him and say the very first country they want to go to is Israel.

Polizer assumed they were interested in Israel because of desire for financial support. He was proven wrong when they told him unequivocally, "We don't want your money, we want your mentorship." Supporting Murad's initiative then, was a natural one for IsraAID and they were able to bring her here to Israel. "We're not a faith-based organization, but we're guided by Jewish values and we, too, find this special connection between the Jewish and Yazidi people," Polizer said.

According MK Svetlova of the Zionist Union party, the concept of “never again” that was intoned after the Holocaust means that “people would never stand idly by while crimes against humanity were happening,” she told the Post.

However, in 2014 the mass murder of Yazidis did happen and laments that almost nothing was done to prevent it. “This is why it is a moral obligation of the state of Israel to acknowledge this terrible crime because of our history….we have an obligation to stand by every people in the world in times of crises like these.”

After two years of public speaking, Murad, like many of her people, yearn to go back home. "Many of my people are still in refugee camps.

We have hope for them. Not everyone will be accepted for asylum. But those who want to come back, we hope to find justice for them," she said.

Don't think this has much to do with 'Jewish values', what does that mean, historical Jewish values or religious Jewish values or what? And are these 'Jewish values' applied to Palestinians or anyone Muslim or Christian? What about European Christians? Not many pretty things are said about them. Israel is interested in presenting it's cause as a humane one, and also interested in relations with the Kurds for Iraqi oil.

Yazidi's themselves should get help from Arabs and Iraqi's, I'm sure the Iraqi state has done much on their behalf, among many other human rights organizations that don't publicize it for political points like this. The situation in the region makes it difficult for some people to help since many are poor or in a conflict ridden state that is affecting them too.

Anyway Jewish people are not going through any genocide or any form of persecution today. So not much in common with them or Yazidi's. Historically Jewish people collectively targeted 'pagans' in Canaan and took the women as slaves, just as ISIS did to Yazidi's in Iraq. Of course that is the Jewish/historical version of, Islamic sources suggest something else(so no one gets offended).

Yes, they are. And applying them is not a matter of willful blindness or distortion but fine judgment.

.
Don't feed this troll.
No matter what argument you make, he will ignore it and just harp on his talking point.

Iraq's Malala

Trash. Be a young girl, become a victim and now you're a human rights activist for existing, i'm more interested in hearing stories from troops on the front or families who are still in the conflict. Malala is useless as well.

my part on them.

She is not a Muslim so her story can't be true ,but if it's even a fake news of a victim who is a Muslim then it has to be true.

Are you bigots now saying the ISIS are muslims or are you saying they are not capable of doing what she said ,no wonder there is so much killing in muslim world.

Even i blame Malala for the drama. Isn't she a muslim? The fact is that why do these so-called victims only find Americans or the Israelis to speak with?

I am glad she is free from the torture of the terrorists. Raise your voice and more power to your cause.

ZIONISTS DESTROYING ISRAEL’S ENEMIES BY CREATING DIVISIONS

Smoloko

James Morris, editor of America-hijacked.com, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday while commenting on the former director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency’s statement in which he said the rise of the ISIL terrorist group in Syria was the result of a “willful decision” made by Washington.

Michael Flynn has told Al Jazeera TV that it was a “willful decision” by the US to support an insurgency and “to do what they’re doing.”

“The entire agenda in the Middle East is based on the Israeli Likudnik Oded Yinon strategy for Israel in the 1980s which the neoconservatives, which are the upper echelons of the Israel lobby in America, have put into play in the Middle East beginning with Iraq,” Morris said.

RepulsiveBadAmericanshorthair.gif

He stated that “the Zionist, neocon-inspired invasion of Iraq… resulted in al-Qaeda in Iraq — of course there was no al-Qaeda in Iraq until the US invaded Iraq for Israel — [and] that spun off into ISIS, or ISIL.”

“But you also had the same Israeli Likudnik Oded Yinon neocon plan in play in Syria, and that was encouraged, of course, by the US government, including President Obama,” he added.

He went on to say that Obama “was ready, and he was being pressured by the same neoconservatives, to bomb Syria for Israel, and if it wasn’t for the UK parliament vote against doing that, [he would have bombed Syria.]”

“The US government is using the ISIS, or ISIL, as the reason to invade Syria, basically attack Syria, with airplanes from Incirlik Air Base now in Turkey,” he explained.

The US Defense Department announced on Thursday that American fighter jets would be flying over the Syrian territory within days in the wake of the Turkish government’s green-light to the Pentagon to fly manned aircraft out of the Incirlik Air Base.

“Keep in mind [that] the US had basically trained Syrian rebels to go up against the Assad government,” Morris said.

“This is all the Zionist, Likudnik Oded Yinon’s plan for the Middle East, and that started with Iraq, it was put into play against Gaddafi in Libya, it’s in play now in Syria, in Lebanon, Yemen,” he observed.

“It’s basically to divide and conquer the enemies of Israel in the Middle East by creating sectarian and ethnic strife, and it couldn’t be going better for the neoconservatives,” the analyst concluded.

The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control large parts of Iraq and Syria.

They have been carrying out heinous crimes against all communities in both neighboring Arab states.

US warplanes have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq since early August 2014. Some Western states have also participated in some of the strikes in Iraq.

Since late September 2014, the US and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

ISIS IS A US-ISRAELI CREATION. TOP TEN “INDICATIONS”
MAKIA FREEMAN

ISIS is a US-Israeli creation, a fact as clear as the sky is blue. It’s a truth as black and white as the colors on their flag. For many alternative news readers, this may be patently obvious, but this article is written for the large majority of people in the world who still have no idea who is really behind the rise of ISIS. No matter which name they go by –ISIS, ISIL, IS or Daesh – the group has been deliberately engineered by the US and Israel to achieve certain geopolitical goals. They are a religious, fundamentalist, Sunni terrorist organization created to terrorize and overthrow certain secular or Shiite Arab nations such as Syria and Iraq, but they are not just “Islamic”. They may be Muslims, and they may be advocating an Islamic State, but they are very much working towards the goals of Zionism.
SyriaDestructionJewsISISmeme.jpg

It’s amazing how many people still struggle to get that point. We have been inundated with propaganda surrounding the fraudulent war on terror, notably terms such as Islamic terrorism and radical Islam, but more accurate phrases would be Zio-Islamic terrorismand radical Zio-Islam. Secret military agencies such as the CIA and the Mossad pull the strings. Here is a list of the top 10 ‘indications’ that ISIS is a US-Israeli creation.

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #1: ISIS Foreknowledge via Leaked DIA Doc

ISISpentagonREPORTmeme-1.jpg

The DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) is 1 of 16 US military intelligence agencies. According to a leaked document obtained by Judicial Watch, the DIA wrote on August 12, 2012 that:

“there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist Principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and DerZor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime …”

This was written before ISIS came on to the world stage. Clearly ISIS was no random uprising, but rather a carefully groomed and orchestrated controlled opposition group.

The “supporting powers to the opposition” referred to are Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the GCC nations such as Qatar, who are in turn being supported by the US-UK-Israeli axis in their struggle to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. As I outlined in this article Syrian Ground War About to Begin? WW3 Inches Closer, the US is backing the Sunni nations while Russia, China and Iran are backing the Shia nations, so there is the definite potential for this to erupt into World War 3. Below are screenshots of the actual DIA document:

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #2: ISIS Never Attacks Israel

FranceIsraelISISparisMeme-1.jpg

It is more than highly strange and suspicious that ISIS never attacks Israel – it is another indication that ISIS is controlled by Israel. If ISIS were a genuine and independent uprising that was not covertly orchestrated by the US and Israel, why would they not try to attack the Zionist regime, which has attacked almost of all of its Muslim neighbors ever since its inception in 1948? Israel has attacked Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, and of course has decimated Palestine. It has systemically tried to divide and conquer its Arab neighbors. It continually complains of Islamic terrorism. Yet, when ISIS comes on the scene as the bloody and barbaric king of Islamic terrorism, it finds no fault with Israel and sees no reason to target a regime which has perpetrated massive injustice against Muslims? This stretches credibility to a snapping point.
IsraelISISisilJewsMossadMeme-1.jpg

ISIS and Israel don’t attack each other – they help each other. Israel was treating ISIS soldiers and other anti-Assad rebels in its hospitals! Mortal enemies or best of friends?

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #3: Toyota Trucks

Where did ISIS get an entire fleet of matching Toyota pick-up trucks? Why do so many of its photo shots feature a fleet of matching Toyotas – matching in both model and color? As this Information Clearing House article humorously states:

“The official story is ISIS stole them from the “Good Terrorists” (Al Nusra), who were originally given their cool wheels by the US government. Which would seem to beg a couple of enquiries. Not least of which is – why are the US giving any terrorists matching fleets of luxury SUVs? And for that matter, how many fleets are we talking about?

So, exactly how many trucks did the US supply? Where are ISIS currently garaging this impressive collection? And why do they all have to be Toyotas? Is it a terrorist thing, or simply a US Govt preference? Do Toyota mind the brand-association? Or the fact that so many of the ISIS drive-by photo-ops look like perverted car ads?”

Some of these trucks were actually used vehicles that got sent from the US and Canada over to Syria. This Texan plumber discovered to his horror that his old truck was being used in the war, replete with his business name still on the door!

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #4: ISIS’ First Class Social Media Skills

isisISILfakeBeheadingMeme-1.jpg

The issue of the Toyotas leads us to the next question about ISIS. Who’s handling their publicity? How have they managed to get so many photos of Toyota truck drive bys? How have they managed to master Western social media so well to spread their message, propaganda and threats? How have they managed to produce slick videos depicting (fake) beheadings? How does a barbaric group of killers, who speak a language very different to English, who espouse fundamentalist, religious ideals (such as Sharia law), and often criticize all things Western, manage to develop such excellent social media skills?

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #5: Israeli Group SITE First to Release ISIS Footage

Another key giveaway that ISIS is a US-Israeli creation is that the Israeli group SITE (Search for International Terrorist Entities) are often the first to find and publicly release the video (as their co-founder Rita Katz has let slip on occasion). SITE was involved in the slew of fake green screen ISIS beheadings of 2014. Speaking of fake beheadings, why did this fictional Turkish TV drama show a beheading just like that of ISIS?

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #6: ISIS Leader Baghdadi a Mossad Agent

snowdenISISmeme-1.jpg

Although this indication is hard to confirm, there were reports apparently originating from Edward Snowden that the leader of ISIS (Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi) was actually an Israeli Mossad agent by the name of Simon Elliot or Elliot Shimon: [GR Editor’s note: this source and quotation are yet to be fully verified, including the source originating from Eduard Snowden]

mossadISISmeme.jpg

“Simon Elliot (Elliot Shimon) aka Al-Baghdadi was born of two Jewish parents and is a Mossad agent. We offer below three translations that want to assert that the Caliph Al-Baghdadi is a full Mossad agent and that he was born Jewish father and mother:

The real name of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is “Simon Elliott.” The so-called “Elliot” was recruited by the Israeli Mossad and was trained in espionage and psychological warfare against Arab and Islamic societies. This information was attributed to Edward Snowden …”

Bashar Assad, President of Syria. The US has been actively plotting strategies to destabilize and overthrow his government.

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #7: Leaked Cables Showing US Plotting Syrian Overthrow

SyriaCIAmossadMeme-1.jpg

Julian Assange of Wikileaks did a great job in capturing information about what was happening in Syria years before the “Arab springs” and current war started in 2011. He reveals how William Roebuck, then chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Damascus, was plotting to destabilize the Syrian government. The following quotes from Roebuck’s cables to Washington show how he was outlining the vulnerabilities of Assad:

“– Vulnerability:

— THE ALLIANCE WITH TEHRAN: Bashar is walking a fine line in his increasingly strong relations with Iran, seeking necessary support while not completely alienating Syria,s moderate Sunni Arab neighbors by being perceived as aiding Persian and fundamentalist Shia interests. Bashar’s decision to not attend the Talabani ) Ahmadinejad summit in Tehran following FM Moallem,s trip to Iraq can be seen as a manifestation of Bashar’s sensitivity to the Arab optic on his Iranian alliance.

— Possible action:

— PLAY ON SUNNI FEARS OF IRANIAN INFLUENCE: There are fears in Syria that the Iranians are active in both Shia proselytizing and conversion of, mostly poor, Sunnis. Though often exaggerated, such fears reflect an element of the Sunni community in Syria that is increasingly upset by and focused on the spread of Iranian influence in their country through activities ranging from mosque construction to business. Both the local Egyptian and Saudi missions here, (as well as prominent Syrian Sunni religious leaders), are giving increasing attention to the matter and we should coordinate more closely with their governments on ways to better publicize and focus regional attention on the issue.”

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #8: Russia Bombs ISIS, US Protects ISIS

PUTINisisRussiaISILamericaMeme.jpg

Before Russia militarily entered Syria, the US claims it was “attacking” ISIS, yet Russia was able to do in a few months what the US has been unable to do for years. Why? Is the US military that incompetent, or this is further proof that the US has been funding and supporting ISIS all this time? At one point there were even reports that US soldiers were told not to fire on ISIS targets, even if they had a clear view of them, as this Free Beacon article reports:

RussiaUSsyriaPutinMeme.jpg

“U.S. military pilots who have returned from the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq are confirming that they were blocked from dropping 75 percent of their ordnance on terror targets because they could not get clearance to launch a strike, according to a leading member of Congress.”

Why did US State Department spokesman Mark Toner struggle to celebrate the fact that ISIS had lost Palmyra recently?

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #9: ISIS Always the Excuse for Further Intervention

Finally, consider this: why is ISIS always the perfect excuse for further military intervention in Syria? Given the history of foreign meddling in Syria, particularly by the US and Israel in the last 70 years, isn’t it rather convenient that the specter of ISIS is the justification offered for proposed no-fly zones, air strikes and ground troops? How would the US and Israel conquer the Middle East without their pet Frankenstein ISIS?

Share this article with those who haven’t yet awoken to the truth about ISIS. Many have already seen through the propaganda. Once enough of us do, the usefulness of this ridiculous, dangerous and vaudevillian terrorist group will expire – and maybe a critical mass of people will pull back the curtain and, for once, get a glimpse of the true puppetmasters.

Concluding Note

ISIS is a US-Israeli Creation: Indication #10: ISIS is an Acronym for Mossad. [The Israeli Secret Intelligence Service. Interesting Coincidence]

mossadISISgreaterIsraelMeme-2.jpg

ISIS itself is an acronym, not just for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, but for Israeli Secret Intelligence Service! This is another way to describe the Mossad, the shady Zionist spy agency whose motto is “by way of deception, thou shalt do war”. In this video (below), the 2 authors being interviewed (Dan Raviv and Yossi Melman) admit that the acronym ISIS = Mossad.

But those who want to come back, we hope to find justice for them," she said.

zionism, state terrorism, occupation and oppression of other peoples, crimes against humanity? yazidis would well deserve destruction and holocaust if they decided to embark on the jew path. errrh. another bizarre jewspeak...

With 3,000 Yazidi women still in IS captivity and hundreds of thousands displaced, survivors tour Holocaust memorial with sights set on their own commemoration

Halfway through a tour of Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust museum on Monday, the former Islamic State sex slave slumped.

Two years after the first mass graves were found in Sinjar, the northern Iraqi region where her mother and six of her nine brothers were killed by the Islamic State in 2014, 24-year-old Nadia Murad was staring at photographs of Nazi firing squads peering over piles of Jewish corpses in freshly dug ditches.

Downcast but composed — and dressed entirely in black — the Yazidi woman placed her hand over her mouth.

A UN goodwill ambassador and Nobel Peace Prize nominee now residing in Germany, Murad was in the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem with a group to learn from Israel’s ill-gotten expertise: how to record, commemorate, and educate about a genocide.

“If only we were able to go back to the ancestral homeland, where we were driven out… we would do the same thing,” she said after the tour, speaking through an interpreter.

The Yazidi community “would be able to create a sort of similar type of museum where we would keep… the houses that were blown up, the piles of bones, the skeletons that were left, we could make something out of it,” she said.

“And all the things that happened to us — we would remind the future generation so they can… defend themselves and make sure this doesn’t happen to them [or us] in the future,” she added.

Standing before a photograph of a Nazi soldier shooting a woman and her child at close range, Haider Elias looked on as the Yad Vashem guide drew on the research of Christopher Browning of “Ordinary Men,” arguing that humans are inherently capable of evil in certain social frameworks.

That resonated with the Sinjar-born Elias, who said the observation was “very relevant” to the Yazidi killings at the hands of the Islamic State.

“Last night, a Muslim woman was asking me, ‘These ISIS members, were they on drugs? Were they alcoholic? Were they normal people?'” he said. “Their understanding, they said, was that they were always drugged before they committed a crime. I said, ‘No, they were ordinary men. They were just typical men who would get up and kill people.'”

‘The memory fades… and they forget the details’
In the summer of 1942 — as the vast majority of European Jewry was being systematically murdered by the Nazis — an Israeli named Mordechai Shenhavi was gripped by an idea. Israel must build a center memorializing the victims of the Holocaust, wrote Shenhavi, who would go on to become the first director of Yad Vashem.

In the summer of 2017 — with the conflict in Iraq and Syria raging, thousands displaced, and 3,000 women still in IS captivity — the two Yazidi activists walked the halls of Shenhavi’s Yad Vashem, initiating meetings with its staff during a trip to Israel organized by the IsraAID humanitarian aid nonprofit and a Knesset lobby on Kurdish affairs.

They were not the first Yazidi visitors to the site, according to a Yad Vashem spokesperson. But they were the first who came to learn about its methods.

Elias was in Texas during the August 3, 2014, massacres that saw his brother, nephew and 50 of his friends killed by the Islamic State. By the end of that month, he had co-founded an organization, Yazda, that began gathering oral testimonies and evidence against jihadis in the hopes of future prosecution of the terror group in international tribunals.

His personal testimony, recalling life in Sinjar before the Islamic State and the attempted annihilation of his people, is 13.5 hours long, he said.

The project is a race against time, Elias said, because “the memory fades and they forget the details of what happened exactly.”

“In the first year, people were very focused and they could tell us exactly what happened to them,” he said, adding that some victims were able to name their IS perpetrators. “They tend to forget about the details and that’s why it’s critical for Yazda and supporters of this project… to create this archive.”

Touring the museum, the Yad Vashem guide emphasized the incorporation of video testimonials juxtaposed among the artifacts as the bread and butter of Yad Vashem’s methods.

You must highlight your religious and cultural traditions in Sinjar, the guide said, gesturing at Judaica and other artifacts from lost European Jewish communities.

“One day you will have a museum of your own,” he told the Yazidi activists, and you will need to get people to sit down before cameras and get them to talk.

‘You cannot compare atrocities’
In August 2014, two months after sweeping across Iraq’s Sunni heartland, IS jihadis made a second push into an area that had been under Kurdish security control. Thousands of Yazidi men were massacred when the jihadis attacked the town of Sinjar and thousands of women and girls were kidnapped and enslaved. Some 45 mass graves have since been unearthed in the region.

Yazidi community leaders say up to 3,000 Yazidi women may still be in the hands of the jihadis, across the “caliphate” they proclaimed more than two years ago over parts of Iraq and Syria. Yazidi boys were forcibly taken by the IS to join its ranks and toddlers were sold into slavery, according to the activists. Five different militias are currently battling over the region and hundreds of thousands of Yazidis are displaced across Iraq and Turkey, the activists said. Several thousand have emigrated to Germany, Canada and Australia.

The United Nations designated the atrocities a genocide. The legislature of the US, UK, Canada, France, Scotland have also approved formal recognition; Murad was in the Knesset on Monday to lobby Israel’s parliament to follow suit.

“ISIS has sought to erase the Yazidis through killings; sexual slavery, enslavement, torture and inhuman and degrading treatment and forcible transfer causing serious bodily and mental harm; the infliction of conditions of life that bring about a slow death; the imposition of measures to prevent Yazidi children from being born, including forced conversion of adults, the separation of Yazidi men and women, and mental trauma; and the transfer of Yazidi children from their own families and placing them with ISIS fighters, thereby cutting them off from beliefs and practices of their own religious community,” the UN said in a June 2016 report.

Dr. Eyal Kaminka, the director of the International School of Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem, declined to comment on whether the Holocaust memorial views the atrocities against the Yazidis as a genocide.

“If one wants a country to recognize… it has all sorts of legal ramifications, but that’s not Yad Vashem’s role. Yad Vashem does not declare,” he told The Times of Israel after the meeting.

Yad Vashem “has no processes of recognition, genocide or not genocide,” he said. “But there is no doubt that there is a great tragedy there and we can help them with methods — in the way of thinking, in the ways of documenting. We will do what we can.”

“You can never compare atrocities,” he had earlier told the Yazidi activists. “Every atrocity is 100 percent your own.”

Murad, who fled IS captivity, however, saw strong parallels with her own experiences after the tour.

“[The Yad Vashem guide] was talking about anger, starvation, a piece of bread — over 100,000 Yazidis were in the mountain and they were starving, and it happened to hundreds of them, if not thousands. People starved in the same way he was narrating,” she said.

Addressing the Yad Vashem staff, Murad said she “always wanted to hear from the people who have been through the same things my people have been through.”

And echoing some modern Israeli post-Holocaust affirmations, Murad said the Yazidis have learned they must “protect themselves by themselves,” with a regional security apparatus. If they had their own security before the Islamic State came for them, “this wouldn’t have happened,” she said.

‘There will be no homeland’

Though they don’t harbor hopes for statehood, the Yazidis hope to one day return to their district in northern Iraq and rebuild their communities.

“It will largely depend on the international community’s support, because the Yazidis are tiny and they don’t have a diaspora to be lobbyists; only a few people like me,” said Elias. He paused and reevaluated. “Maybe we have — there are 100,000 people — but we are not strong yet,” he said.

If the international community doesn’t step in to help Yazidis go back to Sinjar, “of course everyone is going to go to different countries and there will be no homeland,” he said.

Stepping out into the light at the end of Yad Vashem, the guide pointed out the architectural trajectory of the museum, where the spike-like building ends with a vista over the Jerusalem mountains, a pathway from the dark history to the modern State of Israel.

The “positive” design, where at “the end of the museum when you see the light is continuous,” was raised by Elias as one of the stronger personal takeaways.

“It’s not the end. You don’t see dark[ness]… People are growing and multiplying and they’re advancing,” he said. “That’s a very important thing for the Yazidis.”
