Surprised to learn that this guy posed a serious threat to British empire in india and if not for his untimely death, he probably would have succeeded in kicking out British empire from India. The guy had virtually no allies, even though he tried to generate indian allies against the british, they plainly refused to aid him in his struggle, some defected and proved to be treacherous, he then planned to take on british himself without any help, the guy had prepared to attack calcutta, the capital of the british empire but died before his plans could be implemented..

This really resembles tipu sultan's struggle, and his own individual efforts in driving british out of india, but he himself faced opposition, treason etc. The war of Independence when again the british were on the verge of defeat but got a breath of fresh air when the Punjabi khalsa came to their aid.

This really shows how indians themselves willingly embraced colonialism and that they failed to unite and aided the british and opposed those who wanted them out. The 190 years of british colonialism as british raj was founded by the indians themselves.

If the British would've left someone else would have stepped in maybe the French maybe the Portuguese maybe even Russians

Bulbuli-te dhaan kheyechhe

Khazna dibo kishe?

The Bargi has come for his plunder
Birds have eaten up the crop
How do we pay the taxes the raiders want?

Still a children's rhyme in Bengal.

Can't the same be said of Islamic invaders too? I am not downplaying Maratha's atrocities but moral standards were different at that time.

I believe that speaking of 'Islamic' invaders as a collective entity gives rise to very many divisive feelings. It is true that there were a series of warlords who were Muslim, during that time. But their Muslim identity was not always the uppermost identifier; their identity as power-seeking mediaeval kings with no sense of either nationality or of religious entitlement was usually uppermost. That is not to say that their religious sentiment did not come up from time to time; however, it would be fair to say that the coincidence between these occurrences and a crisis in their affairs was quite marked.

Having said that, moral standards were different at that time, no denying that.

Agreed, though I used Islamic as a subconscious response to "Hindu fascist" but yeah Turkic or Central Asian would be a better word.
