Wy 9 11 perpetrators havent been tried?

Take for example Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He is in custody since 2003 yet his trial hasnt even started. If i had arrested a terrorist responsible for thousands of deaths i would have tried him and hang him as soon as i could. Yet in that case the trial of those responsible for 9 11 hasnt even started. What US wants to hide by avoiding the trial of terrorists?
