Botswana is a very very rich country - it ranks 31st on the perceived corruption index - for a third world country in africa, that is a real gem or may i say diamond. He is talking with respect to politics not any random rich ....People usually (both in the West and East) join politics to get rich this is apparent in after they become politicians and get VVVVIP treatment.... I mean in poor S.America this president can live on a farm without VVIP status....
In a poor and disturbed continent like Africa (generalizing I do know some of Africa is doing well) this guy could live a normal man's life than what the hell is stopping people from automatically becoming VVIP? with tens of bodyguards, mansion on acres of land and unlimited supply of petrol for the numerous cars and even a private jet?
- You need millions to campaign and when you owe your sponsors that much shit usually follows ....
If anyone gets a chance, go to Botswana. It is a real eye opener in terms of good governance and lack of VIP titles.
Mogae was an economist with the World Bank when he was elected. He put the AIDs crisis at the very front of the agenda. His security officials were always struggling with him as he would drive his own car without any scerenade and pomp.
There were public complaints about police taking bribes for traffic fines; he tripled the salary of the police officers and guess what, entire corruption issue died... dont .. dont even think of presenting a bribe there, you will be put in prison. Police also dont carry guns as there is a complete ban on handguns and very tight control on even hunting rifles. Only the defence force can carry weapons.
My friends a stark reality from my country just across the border. It is like a different planet when you cross the border.
Aye my beautiful Botswana....really.
