World's Least Religious Nations-or the Atheist Countries.....

We're also one of the poorest. I can see a correlation. ;)
Yes, rise in corruption. In 1975 our GDP per person was greater than India.

until they see the failures of religion , as i see it religion is bad for nationalism , i might be wrong here but the chinese are very much farsighted and they could see how religion divides people and turns people against each other , the british used religion to divide south asia into two parts , the west has been trying to create problems everywhere using religion , the communists in china could see all this hence they encouraged atheism , and their power structure helped them accomplish that. It would be better if people abandon religion and make their nationality the only identity. There would be a lot of peace it that happens. Look what religion has done in countries like pak , afg and other ME countries , this happens when people are in confusion to identify themselves as a pakistani or a muslim , to be loyal to which ideology.
I guess nobody told you about the Ughur people or Tibetians.

that reinforces what i am trying to say , ughurs are muslims and have separatist tendencies , there were reports on how chinese have been asking children in schools to abandon islam in the xinjang provice and burqa being banned off-course. Currently ughurs identify themselves as muslims first and chinese later , there you see whats the problem.

Only 66% of them are Muslims, the rest belong to old Chinese religion. Also, you forgot tosay anything about the Tibetans?

tibetans are buddhists...and read more about how the chinese attacked tibetian monasteries when they took over . The ughur seperatist movement is also religiously motivated.

So East Asia seems to have the highest number of atheists/irreligious people. hmmm...... I thought that atheism is an invention of "evil west" to destroy the precious faith of people to weaken their countries. Yet, China, one of the least religious countries, seems to be rising fast. I guess I am wrong then. :patsak:

IMO, religion was needed in the past to have some sort of control over people when the rule of law was absent but not needed any more. I am fine with someone being religious as long as it is a personal matter. And I also think that overly religious people, regardless of what religion they follow are not fit to live in the mainstream society.

Although I agree to the overall idea, but we really don't need government encouraging atheism. Like you and I, educated lot are already coming to see the folly of religions. Give it time, kids these days are growing up with Internet in their lives. They seeking knowledge not from their grand parents/parents but from Internet and modern education. I believe in 100 years, religion will be the thing of the past just like Caste.

"Although China's society has deep religious traditions, decades of Communist rule have installed a widespread atheistic materialism that still surprises many visitors."

This shows a deep ignorance of Chinese history. Chinese, especially well educated Chinese, are pretty much atheists in the ancient time as well. While Buddhism found more acceptance in the general populous, Taoism is much better accepted among the educated population. It can be argued that Taoism itself isn't like other religions in other part of the world. For example, the central idea of Taoism is seeking the understanding of the world. Gods and deities are there, but they are treated as part of celestial bureaucracy whose main responsibility is maintaining the running of the nature rather than being the lord and master of the mortal beings. Even among Chinese Buddhism believer, the emphasis is also on real world needs.

This difference to the rest of the world has to do with the way Chinese civilization is developed. It is human nature for us to attempt to identify common characteristics in other people. In other parts of world, such as European or Indian subcontinent, it is very difficult for large group of people to find common grounds through culture, language or race. As a result, religion becomes much more important and plays a greater part in people's lives. In comparison, China is much more stable than any other civilization and the people are much more unified through language, culture, race and government. Religion is not that important.

Godless folks lose against god fearin' good folks. The US of A won the cold fucking war against the godless commies.
