US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the US and the rest of the world are looking to Bangladesh for exemplary free and fair polls in the next general election.

The US secretary of state came up with the statement during his meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen in Washington on Monday afternoon (US time), report UNB and bdnews24.com.

The two countries are celebrating 50 years of ties at a time when Bangladesh is preparing for the next parliamentary polls.
Blinken said the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States grew “tremendously” over the last 50 years economically.

He emphasised people-to-people ties as “we've been doing more recently on everything” from climate to health.
Blinken said the US also “deeply” appreciates Bangladesh's “remarkable” generosity in sheltering more than 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

“We're committed to continuing to work together to find ways to strengthen and deepen the relationship to address economic development, human rights,” he said.

“And of course we're looking to, the world is looking to Bangladesh, for next elections to make sure that they set a strong example of free and fair elections for the region and for the world.”

While briefing the media after the meeting, Minister Momen said Bangladesh, like the US, also wants a free, fair and model election.

“Democracy is in our blood. People gave blood to uphold democracy, justice and human dignity,” he said, seeking help from the US for a free and fair election.

Momen highlighted the independent election commission and measures taken for holding the election transparently.

He said Bangladesh welcomes US observers but not any partisan observers. “All opposition parties must come forward to help in holding a free and fair election. We are creating the environment for a free fair election.”

Momen said he handed over a letter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Secretary Blinken addressed to US President Joe Biden.
“We are proud of the partnership,” he said, adding that he is here to strengthen and solidify the relationship.

Momen has said Bangladesh wants to improve its ties with the United States with a stronger trade relationship in the next 50 years.

“Bangladesh has a multifaceted, dynamic and wide ranging relationship with the US. Over the last 50 years we have done very well. We look forward to the next 50 years,” he said.

Bangladesh raised the issue of Rashed Chowdhury, a convicted killer of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is moving freely in the United States.

Momen hoped that US will not be a shelter for killers and will hand over killer Rashed to Bangladesh as Bangladesh wants to establish the rule of law in the country.

During the meeting, Bangladesh sought efforts to enhance relations on trade and investment fronts, reiterated its call for the return of the Bangabandhu’s killer and discussed issues of mutual interests.

The two sides also focused on their ongoing cooperation to deal with the climate crisis, meet the needs of Rohingyas, their safe return to Myanmar, and promote regional security through UN peacekeeping operations.

I am fundamentally conflicted. I want BAL out of power, but via the ballot box in an open and fair election.

This is not possible under BAL and at the same time opposition has been completely neutralised.

Under the circumstances can one truely look to outside powers to act on behalf of the people of Bangladesh, would that not damage our sovereignity? Or is it better we carry on with BAL until internal opposition matures?

It is also a fact that BAL has damaged our sovereignty by colluding with india.

Well the problem is more succinct, which I have realized with time.

You cannot ignore the Dadagiri Indians will want to foist on us.

The point is to reduce the amount of this Dadagiri, while avoiding any untoward confrontation.

This needs deft skills and intelligent leadership who won't be bought out by Indian Govt. functionaries yet will sing the songs of harmony and friendship. Such people are not a dime a dozen in Bangladesh right now, who have resolved to watch our own interest and not that of India. Too many India-sycophant chamchas and dalals in powerful positions who Indians have installed over the years. These people need to go and in a few years they will be gone.

It is well-known to all in Bangladesh (Politicians and Businesspeople) that Indian whim is simply to keep us under their thumb as a convenient market and vassal state.

However we have leverage with India to reduce this - yet we are not using them.

The trick will be to elect technocrats in our country and slowly upturn and reverse the fake leverage Indians have on us. It is not (and will not be) hard to do, some of it has been done already. For Allah's sake, we are now GDP per capita (nominal) richer than them. We have to start behaving per our status.

Indians are as dependent on us as we are on them. Bangladesh is not beholden to India nowadays anymore, people overstate this by far.

When we are their market, their balls are essentially on our hands. We are not squeezing those hard enough - which we need to do.

We are however beholden to the USA, they buy our $hit to the tune of USD 20~30 Billion yearly. We can't eff around with the USA. They can also sanction our leaders and place restrictions on hiring our peacekeepers by the UN.

USA policy for Bangladesh does not involve and IMHO bypasses Indian involvement nowadays. The US has said so publicly.

We should start working on the following,

a) Impose tit-for-tat punitive duty regime on Indian goods if they impose Non-tariff barriers on our exports to their market, and

b) Reduce the trade deficit with India by finding alternative imports, trade deficit is currently to India's advantage by far, and

c) Start substituting critical Indian imports with imports from say Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey etc. (especially with cotton and foodgrain imports).

d) Stop medical and retail tourism to India - which has already started. Half a dozen specialized hospitals coming up in Dhaka alone.

If they wanna play - two can play at this game. Worst scenario, there is always the WTO.

We have to realize that once the money equation (and trade deficit) is resolved, then relations will be more even-keeled and strategically far less dependent on Indian whims.

Trade deficit reduction will play a large part in reducing India's geopolitical clout on us.

The new DW show now connects RAB killings to the Home Minister and vaguely, the honourable PM. They didn't do this before.
The next step that connects the dot between RAB and higher officials such as HM and the PM. If they start naming Ministers as culprits then there's is no going back.
