Women can race jeeps in desert rally
LAHORE: Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab has added a new category in the Cholistan Jeep Rally under which women drivers can also participate in the event.
It was announced by TDCP officials at a press conference held at Royal Palm Golf and Country Club on Wednesday. Minister for Tourism Rana Mashhood was chief guest.
TDCP Managing Director Ahmer Malik first apologised for the hour-long delay in the conference and later said arrangements for the 11th jeep rally had been finalised. The rally would take place for three days from Feb 12 to 14 at Darawar Fort.
He said over the years the event had also given an economic boost to the area where the rally was held. He said the Punjab government had developed the place used by the sport event.
Malik said: “This year the corporation is promoting Bahawalpur. A tourist resort is being constructed near Darawar Fort for the convenience of rally participants and it will be completed in a year and a half.”
He said TDCP would hold the rally over the distance of 225 kilometers from Darawar Fort to inner parts of Cholistan. “More than 100 professional drivers are expected to participate in the rally in four categories.”
He said the event like previous years would also feature a cultural night, fireworks, camel dance and a tourist camp site.
“The departments extending cooperation to the rally are Pakistan Army, Punjab Rangers, Punjab Police, City District Government Bahawalpur, Cholistan Development Authority and Houbara Foundation,” he said.
