Jaabir bin Sulaim (ra) narrates that I said to the Blessed Prophet (saw): Oh Blessed Prophet, advise me. He (saw) replied: "Do not swear at anyone." He (Jaabiir (ra)) says after this, I never swore at a free person, a slave, a camel, or even a goat. He (saw) said: "Do not underestimate anything of goodness, and that if you speak to your brother with a glad countenance, this is also of goodness. Lift you izaar halfway through the leg. And if you don't desire (halfway), then up to the ankles. Save yourself from extending the izaar below the ankles, it is of arrogance. Allah (swt) does not like arrogance. If a man swears at you, taunts you for something he knows about you, do not taunt him for something you know about him. The consequences of his sin will come upon him."

ابو داؤد حـ3562 احمد حـ15389

Should it not be in the wisdom to abolish slavery? Not swearing at slave is not good enough...

Slavery was abolished in Arabia by the coming of Islam...

Sometimes you have to wonder who translates these hadiths...back then a slave was the lowest level of men and so not to swear at a slave basically means not to swear at ANYONE....

Allah (swt) does not like arrogance. If a man swears at you, taunts you for something he knows about you, do not taunt him for something you know about him. The consequences of his sin will come upon him."

Wonder how many bother to read this bit! For in today's world many think those who do not answer back is the weak soul!

When Islam clearly says those who are capable of holding back is the stronger one!

Indeed abolishing slavery was needed and Islam gave way for that.

Reward of freeing slaves
Sahih al-Bukhari 2517
The Prophet said, "Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts of his body from the (Hell) Fire as he has freed the body-parts of the slave."

Ordered to free slaves
Sahih al-Bukhari 2519
The Prophet ordered us to free slaves at the time of solar eclipses

Manumit slaves fully
Sahih al-Bukhari 2524
The Prophet said, "He who manumits his share of a slave and has money sufficient to free the remaining portion of that slave's price (justly estimated) then he should manumit him (by giving the rest of his price to the other co-owners)." Nafi` added, "Otherwise the slave is partially free." Aiyub is not sure whether the last statement was said by Nafi` or it was a part of the Hadith.

Educate, set free and marry slaves
Sahih al-Bukhari 2544
Allah's Apostle said, "He who has a slave-girl and educates and treats her nicely and then manumits and marries her, will get a double reward.

Be very kind to slaves, treat them equally as you
Sahih al-Bukhari 2545
I saw Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a cloak. We asked him about that (i.e. how both were wearing similar cloaks). He replied, "Once I abused a man and he complained of me to the Prophet . The Prophet asked me, 'Did you abuse him by slighting his mother?' He added, 'Your slaves are your brethren upon whom Allah has given you authority. So, if one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of what one wears. You should not overburden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do so, help them (in their hard job).

Can you imagine slaves are being asked not only to be manumitted but married so they slavery would end and ex-slaves be absorbed as respectable citizens. In wars, war-prisoners were made slaves but were freed after they either educated 10 Muslims each or they were given back to their tribes after tribes pay for them. Islam is against slavery in essence. There will be 100s of more sayings but I hope you would've got what are the instructions about slavery and its elimination in Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2079
Allah's Apostle said, "The seller and the buyer have the right to keep or return goods as long as they have not parted or till they part; and if both the parties spoke the truth and described the defects and qualities (of the goods), then they would be blessed in their transaction, and if they told lies or hid something, then the blessings of their transaction would be lost."

Even the children of slaves were given the same rights to the wealth of their fathers than those from a marriage. Usually in Arabia when tribes went to war whole male populations would be wiped out leaving only the woman. Having no system for prisoners of war these woman were usually made slaves but many Muslims were told that freeing slaves was a great deed which would grant them much reward in the eyes of Allah.

Peoples need to understand the hadiths in its proper historical context. Hadiths are saying of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and slavery existed in Arabia during his period. It was common for peoples to make slave to those who got defeated in wars. Slavery also exist today but its different form of slavery and you call them servants

Well if you have ability and power to take revenge but you prefer to not do so and forgive others then that is sign of a strong character but if you stay quiet because you dont have power of taking revenge because of helplessness then sure its weakness

Does it mean that these verses are written for that time and may not work for today? shouldn't God's messages be universal, transcending time and location? Why does your religion always talk about desert and camels while mine talks about cows, snakes and elephants? If one has an open mind, it will be clear how shallow religion is. After all, you don't need religion to know that swearing is not nice and arrogance is bad.

There is a whole lot of difference between a servant and a slave!

You are confuse between messege of God(Quran) and saying of Prophet(PBUH) which are hadiths. Whatever Prophet(PBUH) said/speak to someone is hadiths .I hope now you understand why you read camel and deserts in many hadiths

I hope you are being sarcastic. Yes it was made during that time period but the teaching and laws in the Quran and Hadith can be fully applied today if someone chose to do so.

“I believe if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring much needed peace and happiness.
I have studied him - the man and in my opinion is far from being an anti–Christ. He must be called the Savior of Humanity.
I have prophesied about the faith of Mohammad that it would be acceptable the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.” George Bernard Shaw - The Genuine Islam Vol.No.8, 1936.

Well, it's not about that time...It's historical fact that Islam freed the idea of slavery from the Arab world...It was made HARAM...meaning forbidden.

Why does your religion always talk about desert and camels while mine talks about cows, snakes and elephants?

Well, it doesn't always talk about desert and camels- just a few from the THOUSANDS of Hadith...desert and camels probably doesn't make even 1% of the Hadith present...

If one has an open mind, it will be clear how shallow religion is.

How so?

After all, you don't need religion to know that swearing is not nice and arrogance is bad.

Well, everything has a level and a limit.

Just for example clothing...

In the west to wear minimum clothes is acceptable but it is not very acceptable in the Asian community and goes to a different LEVEL of covering in Islam...Now WHO should decide which is better or acceptable? For us in Islam it is GOD for HE created us.

According to the law of Moses- An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth was legit...Now it sounds brutal...Same MAN- but due to the difference in time, developed thinking and other changes MAN has changed their what is allowed and what is forbidden...
For some states in America Gay marriage is legal for some it can't even be thought of...so WHO is to tell us what is good/ bad and what is allowed?

In Greek it is wishing good luck to spit near a person...for some cultures it is rude for South Asian men it is natural ( :P) for a medical student that is spreading germs....Now had you known none of these...you would decide on your own and so would others hence, a Greek may spit at you thinking he is wishing you good luck while you might think he is insulting you...So there needs to be a standard...

I would like to ask why do people- JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY - LOVE to quote hadith?

I have yet to see someone quote the Quran.....

Thats why i said its different form of slavery ..how you define slavery any way

According to Wiki: Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work. Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand compensation.

While a servant works for you like you work for your boss...It is a job not because they have no choice!

.
None of these people have ever read the Quran. They go online to anti-Islam sites and pick and choose verses and hadiths that are pulled out of context in order to further their own agenda.

.
^ well Talon you see many peoples in backward countries are servant not by their choice but because of their circumstances and they are forced to do certain jobs which they didnt want because of these circumstances and they sold themselves or their kids to get food on their tables and its not surprise to see that many servants are treated like slaves and they do work day and night in houses but all they get is just food and clothes. Child labour is another example that peoples can be forced into work without their will
