Final winter field trials of the indigenous Dhanush 155mm/45 howitzer is all set to commence from this month informed reliable sources close to idrw.org. Army user trials had commenced in June 2016 and were to be conducted over Six months period .
Army to speed up trials will place six production standard prototypes of the gun at various locations to test firing ability during user trials and now additional guns will be prepped for winter trials from this month said the same source.
Indian Army will be receiving three more production standard guns in next two months and entire lot will be tested in high altitude winter conditions . Dhanush is upgraded indigenous Howitzer based on 80’s era Bofors FH-77B 155mm/39 field gun design .
Army and MOD have set a stiff delivery schedule for Dhanush Howitzer and will be required to deliver 18 guns within 18 months of the final contract ,followed by another 36 guns over next 12 months and the remaining by June 2020.
Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) who is in charge of Dhanush Howitzer program already has developed and incorporated 52-calibre barrel to the existing Dhanush Howitzer which was first displayed at DefeExpo 2016 earlier this year and has cleared all Internal OFB trials and soon will be offered to Army for trials since Army still has requirements for nearly 2800-3000 155mm/52 calibre guns .
