Now I am not sure if election of Modi unleashed the hidden jingoist in every Indian, or simply emboldened the extreme right wingers to air their views more openly, but it looks increasingly like the centre ground of Indian politics is being eroded by the far right.

Absolutely, you have already had 2 presidents who were moslem. Give credit to India it is very possible. In Pakistan or Bangladesh - I really doubt if a Hindu can ever become PM.

The president in India is appointed not voted, So it's a matter of conjecture, also Manmohan Singh the first non Hindu PM of India was also an appointee, Not a choice of majority of Indians, Due to the complexities of Indian politics Sonia Gandhi appointed MM Singh in her place

But i dont see anything wrong with the system, It's a democracy and in democracies the will of the majority stays

My personal opinion is while India is a strong democracy it's still in it's infancy like most post colonial nations, It's still a country where politicians get elected to office on the basis of caste let alone Ethnicity or faith, So i wouldn't say Indian voters are mature enough to see beyond affiliations of caste and creed, So it's not comparable like the US, Not just yet

If a Nation of Hindu Majority elects and respects a Muslim President then there's a chance of Hindustani Muslim becoming a PM in India if they want, But a Hindu pm in Pakistan

A good deal of muslims in india are anti and anti israel. No way the hindu elites wants to sabotage their new relation with and Israel by accepting a Muslim PM.

Well, You cannot compare India to any other country for that matter, because of the diverse population we have...... The only comparable point with US would be, both countries got a functioning democracy.........

Well you are right Indian voters are not matured enough to choose candidates based on their ability, not only that the parties are not matured enough to field candidate based on the ability rather than the caste/religion they belong to..... So the parties are to be blamed first then the voters....... I do not see it happening for a long time........

I am in favor of any person who is like Dr APJ kalam. Be it hindu or muslim. he was a true Indian who lived for India irrespective of his religion.

Of course there is no doubt in my mind that for a Muslim to be PM of India, he would need to be someone who respects Hindus and their faith. One who respects all Indians and their different faiths. Who embraces the cultural oneness of Hindutva. Who will not mince words when it comes to Kashmir or our neighbors or terrorism. Who does not rationalize and apologize for what is wrong, and calls it out as such, no ifs and buts and becauses.

I see no reason for us not to accept such a Muslim Indian as our leader.

It will not be easy. Nor would he be popular with all Indians. Much like Mr. Modi.

I think the OP would like to know if we Indians would accept a normal Muslim as PM. It is my belief that many Muslims do not consider Dr. Kalam to be a real Muslim. A normal Muslim.
