First polio case of year in Sindh emerges in Lyari

KARACHI: A three-year-old girl has been tested positive for poliovirus, becoming the first case of the crippling disease of the current year, officials in the Sindh health ministry said on Thursday.

“It is with great regret that we announce the first polio case of Sindh in 2019 as a 36-month-old female child has tested positive for the virus in UC-9 of Lyari Town,” said Dr Masood Solangi, director general of health, Sindh.

He said the child had received oral polio vaccine (OPV) on multiple occasions, but she had a history of illness and suffered from malnourishment hence was low on immunity and developed weakness in her limbs.

‘The fact that this girl is not paralysed shows that the oral polio vaccine works’

He, however, said the child would not suffer from paralysis as she had been vaccinated with OPV multiple times and had fully recovered.

“We must recognise the importance of vaccination,” said coordinator of the emergency operations centre (EOC) for polio in Sindh, Umar Bullo. “The fact that this girl is not paralysed shows the oral polio vaccine works,” he added.

“Had she not received OPV on seven-plus occasions, she would have to suffer lifetime disability. This is also a message for the families who refuse to get their children vaccinated.”

The EOC official said by not vaccinating youngsters parents were exposing their own children and those of others to danger.

The latest case in Sindh has taken the national figure to six this year. Last year Sindh had a single polio case reported in Karachi’s Gadap neighbourhood, and that was a historical low for the province.

The country reported 12 polio cases in 2018.

“The Sindh government will respond strongly and a campaign is planned in the city from March 25,” said an official.

“Despite major improvements in the programme and a decline in cases, we cannot rest and must ensure that no child suffers from a vaccine-preventable disease.”

The EOC requested parents to take responsibility and comply with the recommendations given by health experts and cooperate with polio teams.

Raids on Wheat storage facilities in interior Sindh

On the directions of competent authority, NAB Sukkur team conducted raid on various godowns of Food Department Larkana in the presence of Judicial Magistrate namely Khalid Ahmed Soomro. The Rahmatpur Godown Larkana was raided in presence of Judicial Magistrate and it was found that as per record there must be 42188 wheat bags however be on ground but after counting, it was notice that there are only 27350 wheat bags and there is loss of Rs. 25 million approx on Rahmatpur Godown, Larkana. Further, raid was also conducted on Badah Godown larkana. As per record PP bags of wheat must be 235000 and Jute bags of wheat must be 35000. However, on ground there are around 40000 PP bags of wheat and 5000 jute bags of wheat. The loss is approximately Rs. 55 crore on Badah Godown. Counting on other godowns will be conducted later on.

NAB Raids Tandojam University, Seizes Record

TANDOJAM: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday conducted a raid at Sindh Agriculture University in Tandojam and seized records relating to illegal appointments and corruption.

According to details, there are charges of misuse of authority, illegal appointments and violation of rules against Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor Mujeed Sehrai.


On the other hand NAB also summoned Director HRM, former hostel provost and project director. NAB also raided boys hostel.

NAB Conducts Raid On Wheat Warehouses In Khairpur, Two Officials Arrested

KHAIRPUR: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Sunday conducted raids and sealed several wheat warehouses in different cities of the district.

According to sources, NAB authorities have also arrested two officials of the food department.


Sources have further claimed that the anti-graft body also reviewed the wheat during the raids.

During the raids the NAB teams have found several irregularities in the wheat warehouses of provincial food department and sealed at least 20 warehouses during the process, sources added.

The arrested officials were identified as Qambar Ali Shah and Akbar Lashari.

However, the NAB is still searching for food controller Wasim Jamali who has managed to flee from the officials of anti-graft watchdog since the raids.

Girl health deteriorates after wrong blood transfusion in Sindh

SUKKER (Dunya News) –In another case of staff negligence, the Regional Blood Center in Sukker area of Sindh administered wrong blood to a minor girl due to which her health deteriorated.

According to Dunya News sources, 9 years old Swera who is suffering from Thalassemia was admitted in hospital. The doctors prescribed administration of blood to minor.

The sources further said the health of minor has deteriorated and further worsening after the transfusion of wrong blood. The parents of the girl said her blood group is A positive while RBC administered B positive. The staff is denying any misconduct.

Wrong injection case: Nishwa passes away at Liaquat National Hospital

It is pertinent to mention here that many cases of hospital staff negligence are being reported in Sindh these days.

Earlier, a minor girl Nishwa and a young girl Asmat succumbed to wrong injections. Nishwa was given wrong injection by Darul Sehat hospital’s staff which took her life.

CM Sindh took notice of the incident and those responsible in the incident were investigated.

Earlier, police had arrested midwife Sobia over irresponsibility after a male nurse, who was already in police custody, took her name. Accused Sobia had filled the injections which had no labeling and gave it to male nurse Agha Moeez.

Midwife Sobia was sent to jail while other accused have also been handed over to police on a three-day remand.

In another incident, Asmat, 25, visited a government hospital complaining about tooth-ache. The doctor on duty, Dr Ayaz, wrote a prescription of an injection and handed it over to the compounder, Shahzaib. Asmat’s condition deteriorated as soon as the compounder administered the injection. She was immediately shifted to and emergency ward on a stretcher but upon examination the doctors confirmed that she had died.
However, her family claimed she was sexually assaulted by the hospital staff before being killed. The postmortem report confirmed she was raped before murder.

A report of girl killed by wrong injection in Korangi also surfaced, however the postmortem report changed the direction of investigation as the injection used was misplaced. The girl used to work in TB control program of the hospital.
