Are Humans Carnivores or Herbivores?
September 9, 2005

Are human beings anatomically more similar to natural carnivores or to natural herbivores? Let’s find out….

  • Intestinal tract length. Carnivorous animals have intestinal tracts that are 3-6x their body length, while herbivores have intestinal tracts 10-12x their body length. Human beings have the same intestinal tract ratio as herbivores.
  • Stomach acidity. Carnivores’ stomachs are 20x more acidic than the stomachs of herbivores. Human stomach acidity matches that of herbivores.
  • Saliva. The saliva of carnivores is acidic. The saliva of herbivores is alkaline, which helps pre-digest plant foods. Human saliva is alkaline.
  • Shape of intestines. Carnivore bowels are smooth, shaped like a pipe, so meat passes through quickly — they don’t have bumps or pockets. Herbivore bowels are bumpy and pouch-like with lots of pockets, like a windy mountain road, so plant foods pass through slowly for optimal nutrient absorption. Human bowels have the same characteristics as those of herbivores.
  • Fiber. Carnivores don’t require fiber to help move food through their short and smooth digestive tracts. Herbivores require dietary fiber to move food through their long and bumpy digestive tracts, to prevent the bowels from becoming clogged with rotting food. Humans have the same requirement as herbivores.
  • Cholesterol. Cholesterol is not a problem for a carnivore’s digestive system. A carnivore such as a cat can handle a high-cholesterol diet without negative health consequences. A human cannot. Humans have zero dietary need for cholesterol because our bodies manufacture all we need. Cholesterol is only found in animal foods, never in plant foods. A plant-based diet is by definition cholesterol-free.
  • Claws and teeth. Carnivores have claws, sharp front teeth capable of subduing prey, and no flat molars for chewing. Herbivores have no claws or sharp front teeth capable of subduing prey, but they have flat molars for chewing. Humans have the same characteristics as herbivores.
But aren’t humans anatomically suited to be omnivores?

Nope. We don’t anatomically match up with omnivorous animals anymore than we do with carnivorous ones. Omnivores are more similar to carnivores than they are to herbivores.

The opportunistic feeder theory has been thoroughly debunked. This theory states that because humans can eat like omnivores, that we must therefore be omnivores. However, mere behavior doesn’t indicate suitability. There are plenty of things we can do as a species that would threaten our survival if we all considered them suitable default behavior, such as shooting each other, lobbing hand grenades, or sending spam.

I think well-to-do folks are consuming too much meat, fish etc!!! They definitely need to cut down to protect their body and environment!!! The Japanese folks follow a good diet in that respect - inside the whole bowl of soup you can find a miniscule amount of fish....

“Natural” stuff. Sure. You believe anything what the merchants say. Especially in a country like Pakistan where everyone has legit business practices and no one lies.

We have the option of TRUE natural, hormone-free meats which are protected by the Health & Drug Agency, Food Safety & Inspection Service, Better Business Bureau, and the Law.

Subway recently had to pay millions of dollars in compensation because their sandwiches were 11 inches instead of the promised 12.

Your food industry can be stripped down in two posts. I dont need to. So enjoy what makes you happy.

In fact, I also try to cut non-veg into one meal/day!!! And, I try to concentrate on chicken and fish....
Great... though I prefer either fish or lame...I try to consume less of chicken... I only like the taste of chicken in Pakistan..it is a special local breed and tastes fantastic...and that meat is really nutritional too since those chickens are totally free and naturally fed.. and even their eggs taste really good.

Here, we have the organic chicken from the farms run by the Muslims....

From what I understand, humans should be mimicking the eating habits of monkeys and other primates.
If you notice, they too eat meat but as a rarity. In fact meat is such a delicacy for them that it is often used for “prostitution”. ie. A male monkey will routinely kill a smaller primate and offer the carcass to a female in return for sex. (Not that this has anything to do with anything it but indicates how much of a luxury, meat is in the primate diet)

For those who want to reduce their meat consumption especially beef, they need to look at this food company called
Impossible foods. They have researched for 10 years to create a burger alternative that not only looks and tastes (texture) like a real beer burger, but also uses beets to “bloody” the middle so it gives you a similar experience as a rare/medium cooked burger.
Here’s a link for anyone that’s interested:

I’ve eaten this at several locations in NYC such as 5 napkins and creamline and I can attest that it is eerily similar in taste and texture (nothing can be identical to beef of course)
But close enough!

fock vegis we need BBQ - biryani - karadhi - kabbab and drinks

Also to add, humans are the only creatures to drink the milk of another mammal. No other animal does this.

Milk is not meant to be part of our diet outside of the mothers milk in the nascent stage.
Vegans are right on this one.(I think)

Naah ,we need more animal protein in our diet.

Anaemia is a serious issue, prevalent in vegetarians.

besides India is 75% meat eating nation and is increasing everyday.

How can one live without bacon ?

Humans are the only creatures to drive a car. They are the only creatures to make a sandwich too. They are the only creatures to use a Forum. Somethings are just nature like the superiority of humans to other creations.

Failed to show your bacon pic. Have fun with your swine flu and tape worms.

Pakistani meat Industry is far far healthier than whatever chemical plastic beef ones are eating in americas and europe
No idea where you get this idea from. I can't comment about Americans but native English tend to be bigger, healthier, stronger then most in Pakistan. You can see that in sports. And they did not get that big by eating "plastic".

I am all for Pakistan but it's worth not straying from objectivity too much.

I know, I know, I know India is the biggest meat eating country. It's those illegal Muslim migrants from Bangla in India who are veggie lovers .....
