Why Pak DID NOT oppose Indo-US nuclear deal

Pakistan did not oppose the George W Bush administration's move to ink a civil nuclear agreement with India because it expected it would receive a similar deal from the United States, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said.

"When former President George W Bush sought support for the India-US civil nuclear deal, we said we will not oppose it because Pakistan is expecting the same from you," Gilani said during an interaction with the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Pakistan.

Gilani said Pakistan expects the US to give it a civil nuclear deal similar to the one finalised with India in order to create a 'balance and strategic stability' in South Asia. Such a move would also put both the nuclear-armed neighbours at par, he said.

The premier was responding to a question on whether Pakistan was being discriminated against by the US on the issue of being given a civil nuclear deal. Gilani contended that his participation in a recent nuclear summit hosted by US President Barack Obama was recognition of Pakistan's nuclear programme.

In his opening remarks at the interaction, Gilani said Pakistan is a 'responsible nuclear weapons state' whose atomic capability was meant 'only for deterrence'. "We are well aware of the responsibilities that come with this status. Strategic stability in South Asia is important for ensuring peace," he said.

Pakistan has been pressuring the US to give it a civil nuclear deal on the lines of the one inked with India. Senior US officials have acknowledged that preliminary talks have been held with Pakistan on the issue but have ruled out the possibility of such a deal being finalised in the near future.

Besides concerns about the clandestine proliferation ring led by disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan, the US has raised questions about China's plans to supply two nuclear reactors to Pakistan, a move that experts have said will violate the rules of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

Pakistan did not have the influence or significance enough in this regard that it's objection could have had any effect on the deal.

Pakistan is stupid not to oppose India as peaceful overtures. If nothing else it would create a huge stink, make a ton of people issue some BS statements in favor of India, and perhaps a ton of statements against Pakistan.

It would tell us who is who and perhaps use their statements against them. Pakistani leaders have to realize you got to stir the waters to make things happen.

You know if you went around asking the Pakistani Public what is the one thing you hate about our foreign policy? Most of us would say "Our cowardice".

So you knew the answer already, then why did you go through the trouble of opening this thread? Just to pave way for useless bickering; "You Pakistani's don't have this, You Pakistani's cant do that..... & who knows what" such arguments are counter productive & are a waste of bandwidth, we have been over this indian perception of yours many a times & guess what, whatever indians think of Pakistan, it has no effect on reality what so ever, next time if you feel like sharing your deluded dreams try to suppress your subjective views.

so you take my words as the answer to this situation...thanks for accepting my view.

secondly...the purpose of opening a thread is to have a discussion..I kept my view on the topic....you keep yours or move ahead no need to give lectures to me.

what a r.u.b.b.i.s.h..................what you (indian) dingoos want to prove by posting ...........these thing its old now.............we had enough discussion on this topic.

Above all this opposing thing is a cry baby attitude which we see from our neighbour often even if we buy an old version of aircraft.

'cry baby' lol but you still want similar 'treatment' like India..... "because Pakistan is expecting the same from you," Gilani said!!!! Pakistan want nuke deal just because US signed a deal with India!!!

India only raised concerns about huge military aid to Pakistan but you want them to help for every thing.

whether Pakistan had enough influence or not we should have expressed our objections.

Many circles in Pakistan have objected to many policies of PPP govt so there whatever Gilani says for political reasons does not mean Pakistan wants this and that.

I had been opposing such statements even such a demand for such deal as it would be compromising alot for Pakistan.

If the deal with India took so many years and still on a cliff hanger then you can imagine our case if such thing was in the offing

That is American money Indian crying is merely a phobia which despite your growing economy you will be continue to have.

The US is acting according to its own interests with regard to military assistance to Pakistan hence Indian crying is silly

or to put it plainly......they cannot oppose...who are they to oppose? i believe they are also under sanctions and are not a member of the NSG, so where is the place where their opinion mattered?

It is Pakistan govt's official stand. During Musharraf period also Pakistan wanted similar deal with US.

Its Pakistan that links help for WoT and US-Pakistan friendship to mediate disputes with India regarding Kashmir, even Baluchistan and FATA!!!

The US is acting according to its own interests with regard to military assistance to Pakistan hence Indian crying is silly

Can I say same for Pakistan??? What about this?....................

" The US is acting according to its own interests with regard to nuke deal with India and Kashmir hence Pakistan crying is silly"

India and America called themselves friends or allies but when a friend gives huge military assistance to your potential adversary that any country will raise their concerns. I think India would have said much less if it was a mere sale.

Just as Indians were barking at Sino-Pak Deal but Indians could not do anything. So Pakistan made the right choice to not look like a fool (like India ).

Perhaps they did not oppose because they were themselves planning for such deals with the U.S /China a few months later, and such actions would make their position all the more harder to maintain.:azn:
