Why is Vietnam able to beat OECD countries in PISA scores despite being poor?

I dont know much about PISA or IQ tests but UK education should not unnecessarily jealous of asians. Asians work hard for educational achievement which is reflected in their performance but they are not the one who will make a well rounded citizen. I am quite impressed by general intelligence/attitude/maturity of kids here.

Agree with your logic. Genetics is prime determinant of IQ, while IQ only partly determines schooling results (e.g. PISA in this thread) which are affected by other factors like family emphasis (a cultural factor), availability of teaching resources (a socio-economic factor).

Creativity, critical thinking, and Emotional Intelligence are also very important though, and I think current IQ test is lack on these. Beside that, in my opinion, the weight of IQ test should be more reformed with more emphasis on analytical skills test. Dimension test is actually useless for non engineers matter.

Well said. Intelligence quotient would be more of a factor when comparing between large groups of people, companies, nations or even planets (if there are others). When it came down success of an individual, many more factors could have more remarkable influence say one's emotional quotient, adversity quotient, moral standard, courage, etc.

By your logic, Thailand should score higher since it has the largest oversea population out of China and are more mix with Han.

PISA doesnt determine IQ, IQ has different type of test. It is more related to how the overall education in Vietnam can fit with the type of test in PISA.

It is more fair if Jakarta become the standard as well for Indonesia, since even Singapore is smaller than Jakarta. Jakarta students can dominate many best universities in Indonesia (state owned and subsidized ones) so it is more toward the success of Vietnam education system rather than start to talk about genetic....

But I do agree that genetic determines IQ.

PISA like a IQ test which measures problem solving and critical thinking skills and OECD examines these results to compare how well countries education systems fare with one another.

If we use cities in PISA score than random sampling becomes more flawed with skewed results. Singapore is more like a city than a country with a very small population. While China only uses developed autonomous regions like Hong Kong, Macao and Shanghai the wealthiest province.

Thank Confucius? The top of the ladder are dominated by Sinicized country. Vietnam's economic disadvantage is weighing it down.

Immigrant usually has a better will and determination, it is the reasons of why immigrants has better performance compare to the locals. For USA case, jews is the one who dominate their economy along with the Armenian.

Beside that, Indians uses English in their education, it makes them get easier in finding jobs abroad. Influx of Indian engineers for instant has made engineers salary in oil and gas sector going down.

Leadership ; good leaderships lead to good managament, reform policy
Education system ; good education create Productivity workforce, good human resource
Government system ; good admistrative, easy doing business, good business and enterprise policy, good start ups
High inteligent ; skills individual, creatives, invention, good start ups
Culture ; the most important element to liberal, adaption to fast changing environment, good corporate culture, productivty work force.

If a country with high IQ but shitty culture and government, thus produce shtty leaderships, will lead to brain drain, and wasting talent, individual self fishness, corruption...

Vietnam is good example, high IQ but conservative culture especially northern Vietnamese, shitty government where plague corruption, brain drain, government is full of people with relationship and connection, smart and intelligent individuals found no place for use, many idiots can pass school with high degree that are fake, thus produce low productivy work force...etc. the result after nearly 40 years in peace GDP = 2,200 per capital. Look at Japan with good culture, after 40 years they went to second place world economy GDP = 30k or above.
