The current ammunition reserves would struggle to last 20 days in the event of war

The Indian army, the world's third largest standing army, is rapidly running out of bullets.

War wastage reserves (WWR) are collections of military material held in reserve in case of war. This includes bullets and other form of ammunition, as well as equipment, weapons and fuel.

In India, the norm is that WWR should last for 40 days of intense fighting, allowing time for production to be ramped up and delivered to the military.

However, according to a recent report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), the army needs more budgetary support to reach 50 per cent of the target capacity of the WWR.

In other words, the Indian army does not yet have enough ammunition to last even 20 days, and it's not expected to have a full stock of ammunition until 2019 at the earliest.

An Agni-II nuclear missile is showed off at a Republic Day parade in New Delhi in 2006.Some types of ammunition would not even last for 10 days if a war were to break out.

The army will only have a full stock of WWR in 2019 if the targets of a £2 billion ammunition production 'roadmap' are met, something that the CAG says is unlikely.

The shortage comes at a militarily important time for India, just after the raising of a 90,000-man strong Mountain Strike Corps in 2014.

he corps are stationed in the mountainous north of the country, along the border with China and Chinese-occupied Tibet, in order to discourage any feared Chinese aggression on northern Indian territories.

India has a record of arming itself against China - a short border war in the Himalayas between the two countries in 1962 gave India the impetus to develop its own arsenal of nuclear weapons.

And India's constantly hostile relationship with Pakistan makes the ammunition shortage even more worrying for the military. Without a sufficient stock of war material, there are fears in India that the country would not be able to defend itself in the event of war.

Young Indians protest against nuclear weapons - India first developed its own nuclear arsenal in the 1960s, in response to conflict with China. The shortage of supplies is blamed on a number of factors - there have been political problems with getting funds to the military, and problems with imports from other countries. Due to bureaucratic problems, from 2008-2013 only 20 per cent of the intended ammunition import was actually imported.

The inadequate production rates of India's 39 ammunition factories is another issue.

The huge size of India's military, which has 1,325,000 members, with another 1,155,000 reserves, means that it is difficult to keep up stocks, even when the country both imports and produces its own ammunition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year announced that India would becutting back on weapons exports, and instead would try to become a major exporter and producer of its own weapons and ammunition - however, this ambitious plan seems to have contributed to the recent shortage.

The shelf life of ammunition is also causing difficulties - properly stored, bullets and shells can last for decades. But with large stocks of such material, ammunition can degrade unnoticed, causing problems when it is fired.

The new 'roadmap' to having a full WWR stock has been put into action, but it remains to be seen whether the targets will be delivered. In the meantime, Indian defence ministers will continue to worry about their country's war readiness.

I don't understand how you can manage to run out of ammunition when you aren't even in a war at this point.

Army must be using old stock in training. But enough capital may not be allocated to buy new in enough quantity

If situations doesn't improve we may end up with less than a day reserve

IA should reduce its size of 1.3 million to 1 million to buy weapons from its capex. Even though more than half budget go to army it remain equipped with obselete weapons . Morever govt should add extra billions specially for ia .almost all weapons can be produced indigeneously be it howitzer tank ammos helos jackets etc

are we talking just about bullets?? or tank shells, howitzer rounds?? rocket ammo etc etc??

i believe i read that in Vietnam it took 50,000 shots for each kill. a whole of lot a shooting and hitting nothing.

GAO: U.S. Has Fired 250,000 Rounds For Every Insurgent Killed | JONATHAN TURLEY

Actually, its mostly bigger callibre rounds..APFSDS,Tank Launched ATGMs,Shoulder Fired ATGMs and such are quite short..actually,they're not Short..this WWR standard of Indian Army is quite high I must say..Its prescribed limit is somewhat maintained the possibility of Total destructive War like WW2..and as Indian Army is pretty massive, the required ammo to sustain this high limit is quite massive..

The limit is maintained against a scenario of 40 days of intensive war..
The WWR, incidentally, should be sufficient for 30 days of ‘intense’ and 30 days of ‘normal’ fighting. With three days of ‘normal’ equal to one of ‘intense’, the WWR should consequently be adequate for 40 days of ‘intense’ fighting..

most of the reason for this are delay of purchasing or shredding of older rounds. But incompetence of state agencies and Army also should be noted.but it is true that we should replenish it fast.

we've major shortages mostly in tank and air defense ammunition, anti-tank guided missiles, specialized machine-gun magazines, grenades, and mine fuses.

Thats the original report of CAG....

First of all India is worlds 2nd largest standing army and not the 3rd. Secondly we don't need to fight for 20 days to defeat Pakistan, they will easily go down within a week. Lastly who knows if Indian agencies are foolling the enemies :D
Wet dreams with your Flying coffins and russian relic armour divisions. Lolz i bet you dont even know the number of Tanks Howitzers MBRLS Attack helis and Trucks operational with Pakistan and India.
Or might be some Vedic super weapon that is not know to sane world lolz. cracpot troll

I dont think is news is true. Looks more like an attempt of authorities to suck up to parliament for more money.
Indian Defense industry is a huge exporter of arms. How come its ammunition procurement infrastructure so obsolete? its illogical.

What a source genius.
Well this troll doesn't even know numbers of inventories in Pakistan and Indian Army.
Another petriotic fool.
Your armoured division is just double as compared to pak in numbers and u stupid think that india will throw all of it forces to attack Pakistan leaving none behind to defend in case of a counter offensive. or you will defeat us in our own territory with equal number of troops and equipment?
You are a joke. And i am not replying to your intellect level any more.

India wins now go dance in your street. Stay blessed
