Rome was the largest Empire in the West, and China (basically Han empire) was the largest empire in the East.

But, during 4th century, both great empires encountered large Barbarian migrations to the countries.

To Rome:The large migration was from about 376 to 800 AD, all these Barbarian races migrated to Rome empire, later they started rebel against Rome and finally this event lead to the collapse of Rome empire.

and all these races started to construct their own kingdoms in former Rome's territory, like Germanic states, Frank kingdom, Gothic states...

For China, after 100 years civil war Three Kingdoms period, in Northern China, there were not enough population to sustain the economy growth, so the Chinese empire (Jin empire) let a lot of Wu hu races migrated to Northern China.

Five Barbarians (Wu Hu):

The Uprising of the Five Barbarians (Chinese: 五胡亂華; pinyin: Wǔhú luànhuá; literally: "Five Barbarians throw China into disorder") refers to a series of uprisings between 304 and 316 by non-Han Chinese peoples living in North China against the Jin dynasty (265–420).

The uprisings helped topple Emperor Huai of Jin in Luoyang and ended the Western Jin dynasty.

Rulers from five minority ethnic groups, the Xiongnu (Huns), Xianbei, Jie, Qiang and Di, then established a series of independent kingdoms in northern China. This period of Chinese history, known as the Sixteen Kingdoms, (五胡十六國, 'sixteen kingdoms of the five barbarians')

During WU hu uprising in Northern China, 80% of total population in North China were killed (both Han and Barbarian races).. Most Northern Han Chinese fled to South China to seek refugee.

Basically, during this period, the Northern China becomes a slaughtering ground, for these Sixteen Wu hu Kingdoms, and they fought each other heavily.

During this time, the South China enjoyed a peaceful period, so both of population and economy increased rapidly.

A lot of Southern Han Chinese and Northern Han Chinese migrants were repeatedly crossing the Yangze-river to start Northern expedition against Barbarian Kingdoms.

after this event, the economic center was shifting from Northern China to Southern China

The comparison of Barbarian invasions of Rome and China.

The Barbarian forces lead to invasion of Rome:

1. Frank
2. Goths
3.Anglo-Saxon
4. Huns

The Barbarian forces lead to disorder of China:

1. Xiongnu (Huns)
2. Xianbei
3. Jie
4. Di
5. Qiang

Aftermath:

The Western Rome was collapsed, and never unified again.

While China, after 200 years Sixteen Kingdom period, and another 200 years of North-South dynasty period, many Wu hu tribes actually became Han Chinese.

later until the year of 581 , China was unified again under Sui Dynasty, later to Tang Dynasty, and this begins China's Golden age in the history

So I think this is the history difference between China and Europe, if Rome empire existed, today there will be no Europe, but a large nation called Rome

.
Are you sure that the modern North Chinese descended from the Barbarian groups?

They could be very well descended from the back migration groups to fill the population void when these areas were nearly empty after the war.

.
Barbarian invasion to china can date before emperor yan defeated by emperor huang ,totally non sense.
