Who organised 2006 Malegaon blasts? NIA probe gathers steam
Mumbai: The probe into the Malegaon Blast cases of 2006 turned murkier recently as the Malegaon inverter dealer, who had been arguably falsely implicated for the attacks by Mumbai Polices ATS, claimed of having been taken to a police quarters in Nashik during his unexplained absence for 86 days following the 2006 attacks.
The NIA, which is now probing the blasts, has started to retrace the journey of Abrar Ahmed during those 86 days. Abrar claimed that he had been hidden by his captors in police quarters in Nashik after he overheard some men in a Malegaon hospital on September 8, 2006 discussing some aspects of the attacks.
NIA, reportedly, believes that there is strong connection between both the blasts, and thus are now planning to take Abrar to all those places which feature in the charge-sheet of 2008 Malegaon blasts. Ujjain, Devas and Indore had been named in the blasts case of 2008. Hindu extremist groups were named in that case, with Lt Colonel Purohit being identified as a prime perpetrator of the attack. Besides, several Hindu fundamentalists including Pragya Thakur were also arrested for the 2008 attacks.
Notably, NIAs probe has gathered steam after Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde claimed at a Congress conclave in Jaipur that the government had credible evidence of RSS and BJP being involved in terror attacks.
Interestingly, Abrar claimed that back in 2006, he was even taken to a training camp in Deolali where he met Col. Purohit. NIA is yet to visit the place.
Abrar had revealed that even his wife, to whom he had told about the hospital incident, was abducted by same men and the couple was then taken to Jagtap Colony in Nashik where they were confined for 8o days. In last days of their captivity, the duo, reportedly, stayed at a hotel in Dadar.
An intriguing aspect of Abrars confession was that the ATS charge-sheet in the 2006 blasts was filed on the same day when he had reappeared. In the court later, Abrar had categorically denied of having any hand in the blasts, and claimed that he was being pressurized by the ATS. He was, subsequently, acquitted. ATSs failure to bring to books the real perpetrators of the attacks had paved the way for NIA to investigate the attacks.
In 2006, even Ahmed's lawyer Jalil Ahmed had written to several agencies including the Union Home Minister echoing Abrars claims that he had been abducted by the local police.
The ATS had also arrested several activists of banned Students Islamic Movement of India(SIMI) for the 2006 blasts, but they were acquitted by the court due to lack of sufficient evidence.
The 2006 Malegaon blast case is yet to be completely cracked by the NIA, though several Hindu extremists have admitted of being involved in those attacks.
