WASHINGTON: The White House on Thursday declined to describe Afghanistan’s Taliban as a terrorist group, prompting consternation from the right, which accused President Barack Obama’s administration of being out of touch.

“They do carry out tactics that are akin to terrorism, they do pursue terror attacks in an effort to advance their agenda,” said White House spokesperson Josh Earnest.

“What’s also true though is that it is important to draw a distinction between the Taliban and al Qaeda,” he said, pointing to a difference in designation.

“The Taliban is a very dangerous organisation,” he added.

The Treasury Department has imposed anti-terror sanctions on around 2,000 Taliban fighters, leaders, supporters and financiers.

But the White House’s distinction got short shrift from its political opponents, with Republicans sending footage of the comments to supporters.

“It slits throats, it attacks buses, it drives car bombs into markets and it’s not a terrorist group. Look, you can’t parody this administration,” said conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer.

Others said the White House’s distinction was based more on politics than reality, pointing to the negotiated release of Taliban captive and US soldier Bowe Bergdahl.

The White House says it does not negotiate with terror groups.

RIP humanity and common sense! At least some are coming out of the closet and either playing dumb or just coming to terms with their mental health!

and then people cry endlessly when a Muslim doesnt offer condolences or points out the obvious!

(a) this is one of those republican dirty discussion tactics; blowing something out of proportion.
The statements by the whitehouse, taken word for word, can just as well mean the whitehouse considers both the taliban and alquada terror groups, but that a distinction should be made between the two groups.
And indeed there is a significant relevant distinction. The primary stated focus of the Taliban is on Pakistan itself.
It's alQuada who has proven more of a self-declared and actual threat to NATO homelands directly.

(b) US government personell and politicians are sworn to protect the US citizens first and foremost, with the rest of the world happy they have chosen quite a few allies that they try to help out (protect) as much as they can. None of these US allies are under direct attack by the Taliban.

Republicans (and the most vocal conservatives) are basically almost always full of toxic shit. I've seen their many other sneaky dirty discussion techniques up close and personal, and I think they are the type of closed-minded, always-thinking-they're-holier-than-anyone, and quite frankly too tied to large business interests not to be called corrupt to their core. They should not be in government at all, nor any type of leaders of any country or discussion. Because of their habits of working with the most dirty and dishonerable discussion techniques on the planet to ensure their stupidity wins over more reasonable and polite voices and *their* ideas.
