AFP: Blackwater guard jailed over Afghan shooting

Blackwater guard jailed over Afghan shooting
(AFP) – 7 hours ago

WASHINGTON — A US federal judge sentenced a former Blackwater security guard to 30 months in prison for killing an Afghan citizen in 2009.

The judge also ordered 29-year-old Justin Cannon to serve two years of supervised release after his prison term ends.

Cannon and a second Blackwater guard, Christopher Drotleff, 31, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the May 5, 2009 shooting of Romal Mohammad Naiem, an unarmed Afghan civilian.

Drotleff was sentenced to three years and one month in prison on June 14.

"Justin Cannon opened fire with an AK-47 at the rear of a retreating vehicle and took the life of an innocent Afghan," said US Attorney Neil MacBride.

"While Mr. Cannon was in Afghanistan to support U.S. troops, his incredibly reckless behavior instead undermined our military mission and weakened the bond of trust with the Afghans," MacBride said.

Both Cannon and Drotleff were accused of leaving their military base without authorization to transport local interpreters.

After the lead vehicle in their convoy crashed during the nighttime outing and overturned on its side, they firing several multiple shots at a passing car, killing Naiem, who was a passenger in the car, and injuring the car's driver.

Another Afghan man walking his dog in the area was also fatally shot. Both Drotleff and Cannon were acquitted of charges in his death and the shooting of the driver.

Blackwater was renamed Xe after it was caught up in several scandals in Iraq, in particular the deaths of between 14 and 17 civilians in Baghdad in September 2007.

What does the thread title have to do with the article?

Anyways, I thought blood money had already been paid in this case. Where does the case for a trial come into picture?

. . . .
Both crimes happened in Pakistan. US courts do not have any jurisdiction over crimes happening there. And if Pakistani courts have decided to let him go free, then why should the US courts pursue a case against him?

If Pakistan released Davis then it doesn't mean that by US law he is free from investigation or trials. This was same Kerry who was ready to give statement by his own blood that US has no agenda against Pakistan atomic program, so when he can't make true his own words on RD then how he could be trustful?
This actually shows how many importance they have to bring a criminal into legal court trail.

By what right are you calling Raymond Davis a criminal? Wasn't it you guys who let him go? Why do you care what happens to him now?

What laws has he broken in US? If he broke any laws in Pakistan, why didn't you guys punish him?

Tell me, if Ajmal Kasab was released tomorrow by Indian courts and went back to Pakistan, would the Pakistan govt. run a trial on him for Mumbai attacks? What an idiotic request.

If they happened, why the hell were Amreekans running to save Raymond Davis?
We could do it pretty well. This proves how backstabbing and double crossing they are.

Yes we would put Ajmal Kasab on trial Lakhvi is on trial or is he not?

Because he's a freakin' American citizen!!! Isn't that obvious?

If a Pakistani citizen was arrested in a third world country, wouldn't you want your govt. to help him?

First, i didn't release him, so use appropriate term.
Second, we have care over US official statement about this criminal, they must be bring him into trail for murdering 2 innocent civilians.

Idiotic? OR THIS IS IDIOTIC TO LET A CRIMINAL WITHOUT ANY COURT TRAIL OVER MURDER?
Even if Ajmal Kasab was released then surely Pakistan ran trail for what he did and punished him.

American citizens > Rest of world they can kill anyone

That is the motto of story !!!

Roman Civilization citizens > Other pagans of world (Roman civilization fell flat as we know)
