Iran has criticized Google for leaving the body of water separating it from the Arabian Peninsula nameless on its online map service, saying it could hurt the Internet giant's credibility.
"Google fabricating lies will not have any outcome but for its users to lose trust in the data the company provides," Iran’s deputy minister of culture, Bahman Dorri, told the country’s IRNA news agency.
"The efforts of the (global) arrogance and its Arab allies to remove the name of the Persian Gulf will result in its name becoming more durable," he added.
While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the 'Persian Gulf', certain Arab states have recently mounted efforts to remove 'Persian' from the name of the waterway, instead choosing to call it the ‘Arabian Gulf’.
This goes against United Nations endorsements, which accept the ‘Persian Gulf’ as the only acceptable name for that body of water. The use of the name 'Arabian Gulf' was described to be 'faulty' by a UN Conference in 2002.
A Google representative has told the BBC the company did not name every place in the world – but was unable to provide an example of a similar case of a missing landmark.

The most ridiculous part is their excuse:'Google does not name every place in the world'.It's really funny because Persian Gulf is not just 'some place'.It's the most important waterway in the world.When Arabs don't know what else they can do with their oil money,they start these cheap efforts,trying to buy some heritage and history for themselves.

Iranians have been complaining that Google Maps now has no name on the body of water they call the Persian Gulf and is also known as the Arabian Gulf.

The issue has stirred controversy in recent years between Iranians and Arabs, who each say their name is the only one that should be used.

He said the company also did not want to take any political stance in response to the angry Iranian reaction.

He was unable to provide an example of a similar case of a missing landmark.

It seems that Google wishes to remain neutral in this conflict, naming it either the "Persian Gulf" or "Arabian Gulf" would cause heavy opposition from the either the Arab or Iranian side. Google will obviously have no desire to anger its users from either the Arab world or Iran. What they could do is include both names & perhaps offer an explanation as to why both names have been included in Google Maps itself, however doing this would also result in opposition.

In my opinion for the time being Google can modify their software on the basis of region meaning that some one using Google Maps in the Arab world would see the name "Arabian Gulf". Anyone using Google Maps outside the Arab world would see the name "Persian Gulf" since this name has been accepted by the United Nations as well. In any case I am sure many people would disagree with this idea as well.

By the way I just checked Google Earth, & both the names "Persian Gulf" & "Arabian Gulf" are used simultaneously. In Google Maps however, neither names are apparent. Perhaps Google can use both names in "Google Maps", since it already does that in "Google Earth" anyway.

We are not 'asking' anyone to call it Persian Gulf,it has been named for over 2500 years.It's original name is Persian Gulf.I just want to sit and watch when someone changes the name of Indian ocean to Chinese ocean,how angry Indians jump up and down for ir.
