What makes a great nation?

Regarding Australia, I make a clear distinction. The Australian people are friendly and fair-minded for the most part. The Australian media, on the other hand, is one of the most vile, bigoted media I have ever come across.

Regarding the thread topic, a great nation is any nation that provides an environment for its citizens to reach their full potential, in whatever form they deem appropriate.

The answer is pretty much subjective and I am surprised and pleased this didn't turn into a bash U.S., India, Pakistan, ect. I created the thread simply to see from a cultural stand point what people would list. No one country will live up to all of the standards listed. countries are ruled by people who make mistakes even with the best of intentions. I guess the biggest question is are those leaders answerable to the people. do they repress the people, control the press, and make it a crime to criticize leaders. becuase without freedom a country can become a super power but it can not become a great nation.

Thomas, there you state the crux of the USA raison d'etre. However, even this, the highest value of our nation, is our subjective opinion. Many other peoples are willing to accept less in exchange for more comfort and less personal responsibility.....It will be very interesting to see how freedom evolves in China over the next 20 years.
