in a population like pakistan you cannot make progressive thinkings.....if we were so progressive then we would have made kalabagh long ago....there would have been gas in my village long ago.....in my village for three years the pipes for gas were lying but the problem was that whose name will it be on the plaque....pervaiz elahi or somebody else!!!....now how can you progressively think then??

^^^^i agree.....democracy is the main problem for pakistan.

^^ Agree democracy with people blindly following of anyone is the real problem for Pakistan

..so the question is....is the problem for pakistan the way we rule the country itself??

There are many problems...puppet corrupt leadership..martial laws...foreign interference in pakistani internal affairs, corruptions, illiteracy, use of religous peoples for political gains etc

A huge problem for Pakistan is the kind of ideas below - they and they camel they rode in on need to be exorcised from Pakistan (the world actually):

Is the west Darul-Harb for muslims?
By Khalid Zaheer
April 13, 2011

There is a perception amongst some Muslims that the countries other than the ones with Muslim majority populations, especially those whose rulers are non-Muslims, are Darul Harb — countries at war with Muslims — and Muslims should therefore consider themselves in a state of belligerence with them.

The idea has come from the understanding of Fiqh (the formal legal understanding expressed by the earlier jurists) which basis its opinion on the perception that Islamic faith has come to dominate the entire globe. That understanding is based on a peculiar interpretation of a few Qur’anic verses and the attitude of the first-generation Muslims who went ahead to present the message of Islam by asking the rulers of non-Muslim populations to accept Islam, forfeit their right to rule in favour of the conquering army, or face them in the battlefield. Those who are promoting the idea are perfectly convinced that their faith requires them to continue to seek to invade the non-Muslim territories, in case they have the requisite military strength.

The world we are living in can never be a peaceful place so long as this ideology continues to influence a good number of devoted believers who are convinced that peace cannot come to this world until the entire world comes under the political rule of a Muslim Khalifa. So long as that ideal is not achieved, they believe, this world should be in a constant state of war, with Muslims fighting against non-Muslims.

One of the verses often referred to ‘prove’ this ideology runs like this: “It is He Who has sent His messenger with guidance and the religion of truth so that He dominates it over all other religions, even though the polytheists may dislike it” (Qur’an; 61:9) If seen in the context of the entire Qur’anic message, this verse is mentioning the fact that God sent His message to prophet Muhammad (PBUH), just as He sent it to the earlier messengers so that His message dominated over all rival religious ideologies of the territory of Arabian Peninsula. In truth the message of the verse is not directing Muslims to ensure that God’s message should forcibly dominate all regions of the world; instead it is informing the reader that such a transformation is going to come about by God’s will. In other words, the verse is not giving a directive which was binding to be followed by Muslims of all times to come. Instead, it was prophesying an event that was to happen and was actualised not long after the verse was revealed.

The message of Islam thus dominated the Arabian Peninsula during the last part of the prophet’s life. The companions of the messenger, God’s mercy be on him, went ahead to implement God’s will on the neighbouring territories after his demise, the way it was done by him during his lifetime in the immediate territory. The nations living in the areas surrounding the Peninsula knew that the awaited messenger had already arrived and that the accompanying revolution promised in the earlier scriptures had been actualised. Muslim armies went to all the territories whose rulers were sent messages by the Prophet himself.

In other words, their act of taking over the political reigns of the surrounding territories was an extension of the prophet’s mission assigned to him by the Almighty. That strategy was not meant to be replicated by Muslims of the later times. If that process was to continue until every part of the globe came under the Muslim rule, then Islam, the message of peace, would practically be the message of war and bloodshed, which would contradict the very claim of it being the mercy for the entire mankind.

There is only one logical explanation for the verses talking about the political domination of the message of Islam: The verses are mentioning God’s policy of ensuring that His messengers would dominate their adversaries: “Allah has made it binding on Himself that He will dominate: He and His messengers; indeed Allah is strong, dominating.” Such verses were, by the style of their mention and the context of their placement in the text, specific in their application to the era of the messenger.

For all other times, non-Muslim countries are not Darul Harb (countries at war) but Darul Dawah (countries whose inhabitants need to be invited to the message of Islam). Muslims living as minority citizens are expected to be law-abiding, discharging diligently their obligations to the countries of their residence. Instead of considering the fellow citizens of their country of residence their enemies, they should see them as their friends who need to be positively influenced by their good behaviour so that the way is paved for some of them to come close to the message of Islam.

In my opinion what lies at the root of the problem is too much of a good thing - Religion.

Obsession with religion and allowing sane minds to get swayed by the petty, short sighted & views of a few is a major problem. Add to this the willing abettment of the masses who for want of education, jobs and direction in life fall prey to fundamentalists.

There is a whole list of issues available for pakistan. I don't want to mention even a single issue and these can be resolved by determination to root out these issues.

However, the biggest issue of all that pakistanis are facing today is denying that any of those issues exists in their society and even if they acknowledge that some issues exist ,they blame some foreign agencies for them and a conspiracy theory is always there to fuel the fire.

If anyone completely denies of all the issues in their society then how he is going to change it??

Actually the problem lies in the whole idea through which the nation of pakistan was conceived. To name a few: separatist mindset, hate towards other religion, selfishness even towards their own people(muslims), failure to mix with mainstream, the foolish idea that their race is superior than others, denying common history and culture, too much interference of religion in their day-to-day affairs and governance, failing to realize that religion is meant to simplify their lives and not complicate it.

Pakistan was in trouble long before the Taliban and the Arabs came into the fray.Let us not adopt the ostric approach and blame this or that for PAkistan's failure as a state.
Firstly we need to decide why we made pakistan. I dont want to drone on and on here, but we made Pakistan as a homeland for Muslims, so that they could live their lives as Muslims. If you deny that then the very existence of pakistan is in doubt. But then we back tracked and went about our ways. This was bound to happen because the people who made Pakistan had no clues about Islam in any case. Therefore we had lip service to a system by a vested interest who had no inkling or intention to stick to their word.
Second. We then started off with establishing a democracy. Total lack of education and no sense of fairness in the ruling elite meant that democracy turned into another elite club of landed gentry. Any semblence of democratic values went down the drain with Liaquat Ali's assasination (or even with Mr Jinnah's death) and a series of weak and corrupt leaders soon invited the army into the power corridor. We have since then struggled with democracy and army rule since 1956, and the struggle goes on.
Third, and for obvious reasons, lack of education and enlightenment has chronically deprived this nation of people with knowledge and wisdom. Intentionally honest people are kept in the background and corrupt people are borught to the front, to do the bidding of the corrupt elite. This has never allowed institutions to develop, which can monitor and check rampant corruption. In many ways the current CJ is the only ray of hope in this direction.
Rampant corruption has resulted in lack of industrialization, and in some cases active discouragement of development in various regions. The german Steel mil,s in the 50s, Kalabagh Dam, and nameless other projects which could have seen us a light year away from our current state of despair are a few things that come to mind.
Financial corruption has resulted in lack of generation of revenues , a bulging black economy, and a landed gentry that still refuses to pay tax after 60 yrs and no one including the high and mighty military dictator and reformists can seem to solve this riddle.
Moral corruption has resulted in regionalism and creed and caste selection before merit, which has resulted in brain drain and moral and social deterioration. it came to a head in 1971 in the partition of this country, something which our ruling elites to this day consider (unashamedly so!!!!) a good solution and best for Pakistan.
The social corruption has resulted in disillusioned youth, drugs , and fanaticism to creep into the culture to tear apart what is left of it.
Another national trait of the people is to expect overnight changes to happenand all bad to turn into good in an instant. When this does not happen, people go on and malign anything that comes to hand!!
So where do we start AGAIN!!!!
First things first, the people should decide once and for all what they actually want!!! Islam, or West, Socialism or rampant capitalism, Presidential or parlianmentary system. We then need to stick to it. We need to assure ourselves that army is not a system of governance, and whereas it is a big institution and has a great power base with an interest in PAkistan's stability, it is not the solution to Pakistan's problems. we should decide the way we want to go and make amendments to the constitution accordingly. Limits must be imposed on the job of the senior exec of the country, as well as term limitation to ensurethat people do not cling to power and destroy the country in this lust.
It is important to build institutions in Pakistan and strengthen them. We need to have systems in place so that the beaurocracy is not prone to manipulation by the polity, nor are they unchecked bulls on the rampage, but work within their remit.
Financial stability of the nation is paramount if we are to maintain our independence. We really need to strengthen our tax bas e and collection system and avoid dependence on foreign loans at all cost. we can ask various enterprenours of pakistani origin to come back to their country and start trade from here. They need to understand that this would be within the frame work of the laws, and if they transgress, they will be punished.
Education is the next thing. We need to understand that modern day education should include PROPER islamic education, so that the people have an understanding of the Quran and Sunnah and therefore are not led astray by the Mullah and other extremists with a vested interest. No member of this ummah be it man or woman should be left out and a renewed effort should be made to educate the grown ups. The way to do it is to involve industry and once people have been given jobs, it should be incumbent upon them to educate themselves. We can use the medium of television like was attempted during the times of Bhutto, but allying it to the maintenance of their jobs would result in more motive for people. Throughout the west, we are taught multiple foreign languages. The languages of the East are Arabic, and Persian or Mandarin, given our regional affiliations in addition to english. This should be made compulsary. I also think that the system of examinations should be changed and military training for the youth should be a must so that the health of the nation should improve. I also think that vocational education should be taught to the grown up unemployed and then they should be put to work.
How will all this happen. We should not hope for it overnight. This is a task that will take years to complete and even longer before it bears fruit. It will have to come through the ballot rather than the revolution as a less bloodier way of doing things although understandably slower. We need to let the system work over 2-3 terms and see what it brings to the fore. Sooner or later the people will relaaize that voting for the caste or biradary does not get the work done and look towards other people and sources. Unfortunately, the one good way of choosing candidates from the grassroots was the local elections which has been stopped by this stupid Government. this needs to be recommenced as soon as possible.

Araz

That was a great post Araz but I will take exception on some parts -Study Pakistan more and Arabia less - Pakistan was made so Muslims could live here unmolested - Who now molests Muslims, bombs them in their streets, murders them in buildings, threatens them in their homes? Other so called Muslims -- and they had to learn that somewhere?? And who are the financiers of these school of murder and mayhem also known to you as Islam?

Pakistan wasn't made for Arbi Wahabis which we did not even know of, it was not made for Jamatis who cursed it as Napakistan, and it wasn't made for the ideology of the Talib, It was not made so that some jahil newly kicked out of Arabia can come and preach that our parents were kuffar and that we are Mortad or that anybody who find that objectionable is wajib ul Qatl ! -- unfortunately you seem to think every murderous wild eyed lune qualifies as a Muslim. I think otherwise.

I applaud the idea of national service, I don't understand why neither the politicians nor the armed forces are keen for this idea - it is a great idea to get Pakistanis to learn who Pakistanis are and what Pakistan is about and what their duty towards Pakistan is.

Nah the problem is everything that makes the problems happen.

Zardari and his party
The Muslim League and there politicians
CIA and RAW conducting operations
Taliban and thier bombings
Corruptions
I can go on all day. Do the Pakistani people deserve this? No they haven't done anything to contribute in this problem yet they are the ones who are suffering. You know things are bleak when the electricity cuts off for more than 8 hours a day.

I totally disagree to you at the bolded part....
