What's new

What happens to Laos?

Why worry? You will just put another Hun Sen into power for for no cost.
Hun Sen is still in power, and his son will likely succeed him.
I just want to know if Laos is in actual trouble or not.

Can anyone from Laos even confirm this is happening?
Is it me or Laotian or Cambodian have very little internet presence?

This is because of fluctuation of US dollar to kip (Laos Currency). And it’s only temporary if they can stabilize their currency value.

That’s why better for all countries using Stable Chinese Yuan as a currency payment to pay debt.

Chinese Yuan value is much more stable than US dollar.

Laos debt to GDP ratio is not bad as those western propaganda media tell you though. They are around 62%, that’s in the same level of Qatar & Finland.

But yes, those western propaganda media always blame China on everything.

Like what happen in Srilanka, despite Srilanka debt to China is much smaller than their debt to ADB & others. In the same level with their debt to japan & world bank. But Yes, those western propaganda media blame China all the way while ignoring others

Do you know how dangerous Japan's economy is now?
Is China to blame for Japan's economic problems?
I would we could have their problems. I would not want their biggest risk though, shrinking population is worst.

This is a problem affecting Japan and S. Korea, but I'm surprised it's affecting Laos too.

How much has the US invested in Laos.

Anyway, the Sri Lankan issue was deeper than a debt problem, but agriculture without fertilizer was not working.

On June 3, the China-Laos Railway has been in operation for half a year. The quality and quantity of passenger and freight transportation have been increasing, and the role of the golden channel for international logistics has become increasingly apparent. As of June 2, the China-Laos Railway has sent a total of 3.27 million passengers, including 2.86 million on the domestic section and 410,000 on the Laos section, and 4.03 million tons of cargo, including 647,000 tons of cross-border cargo.

Laos is on brink of default. What happens? I did predict it long ago Laos would never be able to pay back the debts owned by China.

It is between China and Laos. Why should others be bothered?

Have you seen the pictures of Sri Lanka? The country is finished. People dying on the street. Laos bankruptcy will have huge negative impact on ASEAN. Mass employment, hunger, poverty will return. Also, Vietnam will suffer. Cambodia will suffer. Nobody will be spared.

Since the opening and operation of the China-Laos Railway, both the quantity and quality of passenger and freight transportation have been increasing. As of June 30, a total of 4 million passengers have been sent, including 520,000 passengers on the Laos section; a total of 4.94 million tons of goods have been sent, including 820,000 tons cross-border cargo tons.

On July 1, 2022, Beijing time, the China-Laos Railway Vientiane South Station Reloading Yard was officially completed and put into use. After the first batch of cross-border container cargoes were reloaded between standard gauge and meter gauge, they sailed to Laem Chabang Port in Thailand. This marks the realization of the interconnection of the China-Laos-Thailand railway, and the more convenient and smooth international logistics channels for land-sea combined transport.

After the completion of the dressing yard of Vientiane South Station, the China-Laos-Thailand Railway will be interconnected, and the China-Laos Railway cross-border freight trains can reach the logistics distribution centers such as Chengdu Chengxiang, Chongqing Tuanjie Village, Xi'an Xinzhu, etc. in the north. The trains are connected to each other. In the south, the Thai capital Bangkok and Laem Chabang Port can be reached via the old-Thai meter-gauge railway. The international logistics channel of land-sea combined transportation will be more convenient and smooth.

Laos' problem is not external debt, but too little foreign exchange reserves. A country with an area similar to Vietnam has a peak foreign exchange of only $1.3 billion. How can it resist the impact of the US dollar interest rate hike?
It is also very simple to save the Lao economy. Their total foreign debt is only $700million. Not to mention China and ASEAN, Vietnamese people can save them.
You said that Laos' economic problems would impact ASEAN and Vietnam. Are you underestimating the economic strength of ASEAN and Vietnam?

Laos' problem is not because of its good economic relationship with China. On the contrary, Laos' problem lies in its weak economic relationship with China. The trade between Laos and China is the smallest in the Mekong region. It is far inferior to Vietnam, Thailand, and even Cambodia. The annual trade volume between Laos and China is only slightly higher than that between China and the Wa Autonomous Region of Myanmar. Wa is just a province of Myanmar.

The number of passengers taking the Laos-China train continues to increase, and increasing the number of trains cannot meet the increasing demand of passengers. Currently, the Laos section also plans to sell station tickets.
