What's new

We should not forget Pakistan has better overall record: Dhoni

Waseem Akram gave valuable bowling tips to Irfan Khan Pathan.............

I think his demise (Irfan) hurt us most in recent years. More than Nehra, who at least won us a World Cup. Ishant is another tragedy.

Irfan was good enough to catch Wasim Akram's attention. There can be no higher compliment than that. Btw, Wasim seems to like Mohd Shami too. But the poor chap is too small yaar. Why we got all the small Muslims at Partition?

1986 to 1992 was the most one-sided affair in favor of Pakistan. And they had a great team as well, both batting and bowling. I suffered through each and every match from that period.

Sir I was born in 93. :)

Please tell us a little about that period!

He was v. good all rounder but

Career , Bat Avg.: 33.41
1982-1992 , Bat Avg.: 34.59

Not 50+ dude :p

From cricinfo:

Few would dispute that Imran was the finest cricketer Pakistan has produced, or the biggest heartthrob. Suave, erudite and monstrously talented, he gave cricket in the subcontinent real sex appeal in the 1970s and 1980s. As such he and TV completed the popularisation of the game in his country which Hanif Mohammad and the radio had begun. Thousands, if not millions, who had never dreamt of bowling fast on heartless baked mud suddenly wanted to emulate Imran and his lithe bounding run, his leap and his reverse-swinging yorker. He also made himself into an allrounder worth a place for his batting alone, and captained Pakistan as well as anyone, rounding off his career with the 1992 World Cup. He played hardly any domestic cricket in Pakistan: instead he just flew in for home series from Worcestershire or Sussex, or rather from the more fashionable London salons. His averages (37 with the bat, 22 with the ball) put him at the top of the quartet of allrounders (Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee and Kapil Dev being the others) who dominated Test cricket in the 1980s. And whereas Botham declined steadily, Imran just got better and better: in his last 10 years of international cricket he played 51 Tests, averaging a sensational 50 with the bat and 19 with the ball. He gave no quarter during some memorable battles with West Indies - Pakistan drew three series with them at a time when everybody else was being bounced out of sight - and he led Pakistan to their first series victory in England in 1987, taking 10 for 77 with an imperious display in the decisive victory at Headingley. After retirement he remained a high-profile figure, with his marriage - and subsequent split with - the socialite Jemima Goldsmith and a move into the labyrinthine world of Pakistan politics.

Today it's a batsman game with all rules favoring the batsmen...Imran today wouldn't be notching up the wickets or the averages compared to back in the times, now batsmen dominate the bowlers overall and are way more agressive then then...He would have burnt with exhaustion in 5 years at most.

Wrong assumptions.

If Wasim, Waqar and the latest to retire Brett Lee (retired few days ago) did not burn with exhaustion while playing modern ODI cricket, I can't see why he would have burnt down.

Because of the amount of cricket one plays nowadays..Brett Lee has been injured and out of the game numerous times. .see the high turn around of bowlers to come to an assumption. .There is a new set of bowlers every 5 years or so in every team.

New rules shouldn't affect the fitness of the bowlers....Its just that they favor batsman :p

Oh man, not good memories. Ind-Pak matches were much more hostile, both on the field and in the stands. After that last ball six, the Indian team just couldn't handle the pressure of a close match and would just collapse against Pakistan, esp. in Sharjah. I remember Salim Malik beating the shit out of Maninder Singh's bowling in the one-day matches during the India tour after that Sharjah match. Salim Malik and Moin Khan were a bigger thorn in India's side than Miandad and other well-known Pakistani players, thats what I felt, might not be true. They always clicked against India. Prabhakar was the only fighter on the Indian side, and his funky swing bowling was fun to watch.

Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut for Pakistan under Imran Khan

And yet three best fast bowlers of Pakistan could not break morale of a 15 year old boy.

Tendulkar played his first Test match against Pakistan in Karachi. And he couldn't have had a tougher induction: in Karachi, Pakistan, he faced the fearsome bowling attack of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis (also making his debut).

He made just 15 runs, being bowled by Waqar Younis. Cricket critics commended Sachin for braving numerous blows to his body at the hands of the Pakistani pace attack in this series. While his 15 runs can hardly be considered memorable, the way in which he withstood the numerous blows to his body was an instant indication that the boy was quickly becoming a man. Sure enough, Tendulkar scored his maiden test fifty a few days later.

In the final test in Sialkot, though he was hit on the nose by a bouncer he declined medical assistance and continued to bat with a bleeding nose. In that Test series Sachin scored 215 runs in all at an average of 35.83.

In a 20 over exhibition game in Peshawar, Tendulkar scored 53 runs off 18 balls, including an over in which he scored 27 runs off Abdul Qadir. The then Indian captain Kris Srikkanth later recalled this match as “one of the best innings I have seen”
