Exactly, what we have been pointing to with the characterization of "Westminster on the Indus" - It is a curious lack of imagination that instead of the essence, the fundamental ideas being examined and refined, Pakistan have instituted or rather supplanted Westminster on the Indus, with complete disregard to the political realities on the ground, with complete disregard to the historical, and cultural context.

The editorial says this of what Pakistanis think of "democracy" :

Most Pakistanis do not give enough importance to democracy

Is this not a amazing statement? Why, WHY, do most Pakistanis not give what the editorial calls "enough" (how much is enough?) importance to "Democracy"??? Well, Obviously, it does not produce, it does not deliver -- would you give give any, not just "enough" importance to anything that did not do what it claims it can do??

Of course, then we must ask, WHY doesn't it work? I would suggest that the there are several reasons, prime among them is that the ideas that inform "Westminster on the Indus" are deeply flawed - Democracy is not just "voting"? It most certainly cannot be "Majoritarianism" - The editorial has it right, doesn't it when it states:

The so-called ‘democrats’ may themselves end up being seen as a danger to the institution of democracy.

But the editorial is also flawed in this statement, is it not? Communists killed Communism? Not that the idea of Communism fell because of it's internal incoherence, not because it was itself flawed, but because communists were flawed?? hain ji? Do so called "Democrats" have no relationship to so called "Democracy"???

Democracy does not have any mistake, any mistake not because God, ah, democracy.When you begin to doubt, it is a risk, but also an opportunity. Now that Pakistan has enough doubts. Even if add one, no problem. That being the case, more concerned with substance. Concern for Pakistan really need, more concerned about the people living and substantive rights (even if not sounds "beautiful"). But you do not need to abandon the "democracy", since he was just a formality in the short term, then keep, to block the wind or rain ,that also is good.

I think you misunderstand what Democracy is for India then ; Democracy in many ways is a unifying force amongst the myriad of cultural, regional, linguistic and subtle demographic diversities that is found in India. There is no common voice that can represent the nation ; To project this collective voice is the edifice of Democracy.

Hence, People in India will NEVER question the general principle of Democracy ; To question it is questioning your own standing in Society, whether you need to work under an authoritarian-kneaded Communist regime or a People-represented Democracy like India or under whatever role you want your individual rights to be subjected to. Thus the belief in Democracy for Indians is a given ; What is a continuous process is strengthening the foundations of it thereby benefiting the most.

There is no common voice that can represent the nation ; To project this collective voice is the edifice of Democracy.

Ready to take tough decisions in national interest

LAHORE: The government is ready to take “difficult decisions in the larger interest of the nation”, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday in response to a question regarding an “in-house change” since he has the backing of the House.

Talking to reporters during a meeting with representatives of the print and electronic media, the PM said the federal government believed in cooperation and reconciliatory attitude towards the judiciary as well as other institutions, adding the government would accord more independence to the institutions in the country and strengthen them.

When asked whether he still believed his government was faced with the “conspiracy of the pen”, Gilani said no conspiracy could be hatched against anybody if the institutions were strong, adding, “There can be no trap because there is a realisation within parliament that we have to protect democracy.”

Swiss cases: He said the government was duty-bound to follow the directions of the courts, adding that it had submitted a review petition in the apex court regarding the Swiss cases against President Asif Ali Zardari and everyone must wait for the decision.

Regarding the Pakistan Army’s role in the flood relief efforts, Gilani said everyone should commend the role of the army in flood relief, adding that the army was a part of the government.

Army: He said the army was a highly professional and pro-democracy institution and people should not have the misconception that there were two parallel governments.

Commenting on the foreign media’s speculations regarding a meeting between the prime minister, president and the army chief, the premier said the meetings pertained to routine issues as well as defence-related matters and people should have complete confidence in the army.

CoD: Gilani said the Pakistan People’s Party government had implemented 27 out of the 32 clauses of the Charter of Democracy, while it had won seats in all parts of the country in the recently-held by-elections.

Regarding the opposition’s vehement criticism against the government, the prime minister said the government was ready to reform itself in the light of their advice, adding that he would even resort to cutting down the size of his cabinet, if need be. app

Cabinet size being cut to 40

ISLAMABAD: Following tremendous financial and international pressure, it has been decided to reduce the size of the federal cabinet from 62 to 40.

There were 40 federal ministers in the cabinet and after the resignation of Abdul Qayyum Jatoi, it has come down to 39. The Minister of State for Production, Sardar Salim Hyder, is expected to be promoted and replace Jatoi as the Minister for Defence Production.

There are 17 state ministers in the cabinet whose jobs are now in danger. With the passage of the 18th Amendment, a number of ministries are set to be transferred to the provinces and, as such, there shall be no justification for those ministries at the federal level.

It was learned that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will soon call on the president to settle the list of the cabinet members who are to be retained. He will also take the coalition partners into confidence.
