DAWN.COM | Provinces | 'We are prepared for a long war'

PESHAWAR: A Taliban spokesman denied Tuesday that Pakistan army has won a series of battlefield victories in its offensive in tribal South Waziristan, saying the militants are drawing government soldiers into a trap.

‘We are prepared for a long war,’ Azam Tariq told an Associated Press reporter by telephone.

‘The areas we are withdrawing from, and the ones the army is claiming to have won, are being vacated by us as part of a strategy. The strategy is to let the army get in a trap, and then fight a long war.’

Tariq also denied army claims that hundreds of militants have been killed, saying only 11 have died so far.

In mid-October, the Pakistani government launched an offensive in the South Waziristan tribal region, viewed as the main stronghold in the country of both the Taliban and al-Qaida.

The military says it has pressed deep into Taliban territory and captured some Taliban strongholds. The offensive has drawn retaliatory militant attacks across Pakistan.

A few hours after Tariq's claim, the army announced that 21 militants had been killed in the past 24 hours in South Waziristan and that government forces were continuing to press into Taliban territory. It said in a statement that one government soldier had died in the past day.

Much of the fighting was in Sararogha, a Taliban base where militant leaders have long operated openly, occasionally even using it for news conferences. The army said it killed 16 fighters there as it tried to clear the town of militants.

What is actually happening, though, is impossible to confirm.

Pakistan has effectively sealed off the tribal areas, semiautonomous regions where the central government in Islamabad has long had only minimal authority. —AP

:) yeh me too would be happy to see these terrorists vacate areas, they have nowhere to go unless US, NATO gives them a safe passage which they did at the start of the operation.

I would be more happy if Pakistan army try to hold some key strategic points which could give them an edge over these terrorists

No doubt this is a very long war. And the situation in the cities is not going to get any better soon... I think people are starting to realise the importance of this action against this scourge.

'long war' here we come.........
our soliders are doing a great job. as of now, taliban are withdrawin from every town. maximum battle time for each town has not been more than few days.

By announcing the "trap" strategy the Talibs may have influenced the PA to proceed cautiously and deliberately, thus giving the leadership time to escape. But where? Kandahar, Quetta, Peshawar, or Karachi? Or maybe every small village along the AfPak border?

Talaban shurah is mobile ,always changing location in both countries.I think Kurakram mountains or hamalia hindu kush mountain ranges will be safe place for them instead of Quetta or Kandhar?

^^ i doubt if they will select karakorum and that also when winter is rit there....

well, apparently the PA isn't buying that, in one statement a senior military officer said talibs are fleeing and it isn't a tactical withdrawal, they wouldn't be leaving huge cache of weapons behind if it were.
it's in the thread "army close to winding up first phase of operation."

Good luck getting heating in your caves

Bears are warm ;)

A long war but then i think the army always realised there is no such thing as a short one, no one belives the "we will be home for christmas" speaches if they have studied any history.

The same thing goes for the taliban after giving up its aa guns mortars, supplies, bases and tons of ammo saying its all part of a strategic withdrawl. Last guy to try a strategic withdrawl by giving up all his equipment and supplies was napoleon and he didnt fare to well during winter either.
