A few days ago,at the celebrations for the 800 years from the conquest of Alanya by the Seljuks,Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu mentioned that Turkey is a nation of sailors or naval nation.

This rhetoric has been heard again in the last few years. That sounded a bit like Indians saying "We are a nation of airmen".

Now,I knew that Turks were historically NOT a nation of sailors. Sure they had a big navy during the late 15th to late 19th century, but I had to check the naval battle history of the Ottoman Empire:

So basically, the Turks most of their battles during the 16th century and mostly against the Venetians. Except of course the big victory at Preveza. Apart from that, they lost almost all of their naval battles, often fighting against smaller fleets.

İtalians , Spaniards , French , British , Portuguese had strongest Naval Powers
and There Warships were so superior

still Ottoman Empire could control Mediterranean Sea from Algeria to Cyprus for centuries
also Ottoman Empire sent Navy to S.Arabia , İndia and İndonesia to fight European Powers to protect Muslims

TURKS vs all European Powers

Pakistan has history since 1947 while Turkish Navy since 1081

Turkish Army since 209 BC
Turkish Navy since 1081
Turkish Airforce since 1912

yes TURKS vs all European Powers

still same senario
USA+France+İtaly+Greece+Egypt did military exercises against Turkiye in the Eastern Mediterranean

but its not 18th , 19th centuries , its 2021
Turkish Missiles can turn all enemy Warships into crap of metal if they try to enter Turkish EEZ

btw Turkish Navy is strongest in the region
and Turkiye has great Naval Industry

Greeks says we are naval nation
but Greece can not produce even Corvette .....

Most of these naval battles took place during wars of the Ottoman Empire against a specific nation.

For example Russo-Turkish Wars,Italian-Turkish Wars,Portuguese-Ottoman conflicts,Venetian-Ottoman Wars etc.

In many,if not most of these cases like @PakFactor noticed, the Ottomans had a superior force of ships.

Why do you blame Pakistan for having a Navy since 1947 and brag about a supposed Seljuk navy formed in 1080?

its not true ... European Warships were bigger , faster , superior fire power , etc

European Powers had great naval technology to compare with the Ottoman Empire
therefore European Powers colonized America ,Australia , Africa and Asia

and Turks fought against European Powers and Russia for centuries
its so hard to fund and create Military Power

Ottoman Empire focused on Army ( land forces )

Admiral Heyreddin Barbossa, Admiral Yi Sun Sin and Admiral Siddi Yakut Khan are the best admirals.

Yes,I was actually going to mention earlier that most of the few naval victories the Ottomans achieved, were achieved under Barbarossa.

It was at that period they had some victories against European navies. Before and after that period it was mostly losses.

The Russians won almost every naval engagement against the Turks, then the Italians, the British, the French, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Greeks during the revolution and after. There were a few "indecisive" battles, but very few.

Then you have Cavusoglu say "We are a nation of sailors". It's like hearing the Indians say "We are a nation of pilots".

P.S. Admiral Yi was epic.

You forget to mention that most sailors in the Ottoman Empire were Greeks...we are people of the sea...

They were a mixture. Slaves,Christian mercenaries,Muslims from the Mediterranean, conscripts etc. At least in the first centuries, were they had to use men to row. Later the navy was mostly Turkish-manned probably.

even Russians always were allies with Europeans to fight against the Turks at the same time

Give it a rest and accept that you are not a naval people. Come on. Settle for this one.
