ISLAMABAD: The government is all set to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan Agency, signalling a paradigm shift in its policy. Talking to The Express Tribune, both government and security officials confirmed that the civil and military leaderships have finally concluded that a targeted military operation is now ‘unavoidable’.

A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and attended by army chief General Raheel Sharif and other senior officials on Thursday discussed several options to deal with the Taliban in the face of a recent surge in attacks carried out by the group.

One official, who asked to remain anonymous, disclosed that there was a ‘greater realisation’ among all stakeholders that certain groups will never enter into dialogue and will have to be dealt with the use of force. Sources said the decision to initiate a ground offensive in March is believed to be taken on account of the challenge posed by the harsh winter in North Waziristan to security personnel operating in the agency. However, surgical strikes may soon be carried out against Taliban hideouts ahead of the targeted operation in the tribal region.

When asked a security official pointed out that the military was ready to take on the challenge. “We [the army] have the capacity and the will to eliminate all such groups which are not willing to reconcile,” said the official.

Pakistan has long resisted foreign pressure to launch a ground offensive in North Waziristan, which is considered a safe haven not only for TTP, but several other groups, such as the Haqqani Network.

It is unclear, however, whether the March operation will also target the Haqqani Network.

One retired officer, who is still closely connected with the security establishment, said the Haqqanis by now probably understand that the operation in North Waziristan is inevitable.

“The Haqqanis have strongholds in Afghanistan’s three provinces and they will definitely move out of North Waziristan before the start of any operation,” the retired two-star army officer told The Express Tribune.

However, he said a military operation should have been carried out much earlier and a lot of time had already been wasted in the name of peace talks.

The Express Tribune has also learnt that the recent air strikes in North Waziristan were carried out after security agencies exploited divisions within various outfits operating in the region. Some of the groups, which are willing to hold peace talks, had provided ‘key intelligence’ about the presence of senior TTP commanders and other foreign fighters in Mir Ali and Miramshah.

On the other hand, a senior cabinet member said the government would still hold talks with groups willing to reconcile. “But those who are not willing to accept our peace offers will have to be dealt with accordingly,” he added.

They will have to target all of them or else it will be useless. That means Haqqanis as well.

very good , tell them all plan of action , time and exact date , so all leadership will get their asses out or hide in caves :hitwall:

In March? Excellent, give them two months time to prepare and fortify, or simply cross the border and live in afghanistan, so that when the army finally begins the operation, they will only encounter terrified locals. And then after a while there will be calls for the army to leave, and when that happens, the militants can move back again.

Why exactly does the army need two months to begin an operation in its own country?

Less civilian casualties better planing intelligence etc? I mean please use ur common sense before making such stupid posts.

Thats definitely a suicide mission, we can not create more enemies. Pakistan has no threat from H.Network.
Haqqanis to this date have been giving shelter to ttp militants especially their leadership in north wazeeristan. They were the first ones to condemn the killing of hakeemullah mehsud and to call for revenge-through their official spokesperson..So its not that there is no threat from haqqanis but more or less about whether pak army can afford to fully antagonise them-especially since NATO withdrawal is imminent.

God speed and good luck to boys, may Allah protect our Army and eliminate enemies at earliest with least civil casualty !

Go boys !! :guns:

Because only civilians will leave the place when an offensive is announced months in advance, right? I mean, it's not like the militants can leave the place in two months? Is that what your common sense tells you?

This is true. An operation in NW is most likely to happen, I'd go as far as calling it a matter of when and not a matter of if.

I know a guy who is is Miranshah, and after the PAF airstrikes, he was absolutely chuffed about it and was jumping with joy...you folks can realize what it feels to get bombarded day and night but don't have permission to retaliate. After the PAF strikes, the morale of the forces there just zoomed up...even if nothing really big happened, but it showed that somebody is fighting them and we are no sitting ducks.

I get the feeling that they're trying to get some groups on the negotiation table by doing this.

However, the army doesn't have to leave completely. They can setup a cantt just as they did with Swat, only sooner.

Good luck.It will be success when they hunted all of them without good or bad classification.

at last some good news. This news in itself will do a lot for Pakistan and PA.
views regarding HN, I think, military do not believe in intention but in capability. If Intel suggest that HN can be harmful at any time in future, we should go to target them too. Afghanistan is not the core issue for us, core issue is terrorism in Pakistan and it should be our First Priority. Question if Leadership running away before operation: If leadership runsaway from operation that's a good signal and we should capitalize on that (TTP leadership coward, does not believe in shaadat etc...). also once leadership is without followers it is not more a leadership...rather a criminals on run.
relating consequences relating to bloodshed in the aftermath of operation, I am okey with it. Because we are already suffering a lot of bloodshed although we are not doing anything. if we can crush TTP and neutralize it for long period, we should be ready for some more pains...

Lets be Brave to face the Threat eye ball to eye ball-----Be Pakistani
