WATCH: ISRAEL ENTERS 'NEW ERA' OF MISSILE DEFENSE WITH ARROW-3
BYANNA AHRONHEIM

18 JANUARY 2017 17:46

Israeli Air Force receives operational Arrow-3 ballistic interceptors.

Israel took a step a closer to defending itself against a possible Iranian missile onslaught with the formal transfer of Arrow-3 interceptors from the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) to the Israeli Air Force.

“It is a new era in the Israel’s multi-layered defense system,” said Moshe Patel, Director of Israel Missile Defense Organization.

A ceremony Wednesday was attended by the Boeing (Israel) President David Ivry, Air Defense Force Commander Brigadier General Zvika Yachimovitch, IAI Vice President and Head of the Missile and Space program Boaz Levy, Head of Ministry of Defense (Director of Research and Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure) Brigadier General (Ret) Danny Gould, and General William Coley, a representative of the US Missile Defense Agency.

In face of the growing missile threat to Israel, the Arrow 3 will form the uppermost layer of Israel’s multilayered defense system along with the Arrow 2, David’s Sling and Iron Dome system. Together the systems will provide Israel will a protective umbrella able to counter threats posed by both short and mid-range missiles used by terror groups in Gaza and Hezbollah as well as the threat posed by long-range Iranian missiles.

The Arrow 3 is highly maneuverable system designed to provide ultimate air defense by intercepting ballistic missiles when they are still outside the Earth’s atmosphere and is considered one of the world's best interceptors due to its breakthrough technological capabilities.

“The advent of the Arrow 3 as an operational system of the air force is a significant step up in the air defense of the State of Israel and along with the Arrow 2 will reduce any chances of any harm to the State of Israel” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, all components of the Arrow missile defense system were upgraded and are compatible with Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors. The capabilities of the command and control centers as well as radar detection systems were also upgraded to cope against future threats in the region.

The Arrow-3 development program is one of the joint programs between Israel and the United States, was co-managed by the US Missile Defense Agency and IMDO, a division of the Israeli Ministry of Defense. According to Patel, IMDO will continue to work with the United States in developing additional capabilities for the system and further trials of the Arrow 3 system are expected in the future.

New Era in Israel's Multi-Layered Air Defense System

Operational Arrow-3 interceptors were delivered today to the Israeli Air Force Aerial Defense Array. The Arrow-3 interceptor capabilities enable longer range, higher altitude (exo-atmospheric) and more precise ballistic missile engagements

The Arrow Weapon System (AWS), the upper-most tier in the Israeli strategic capability, enters into a new era this morning in its defense from ballistic missiles threats. Before today, the AWS consisted of Arrow-2 interceptors, and has now added for the first time the Arrow-3 operational interceptor (made by Israel Aerospace Industries/MLM). The Arrow-3 interceptor is a world-class missile that, together with the Arrow-2, expands the defense envelope provided to the State of Israel. The Arrow-3 interceptor capabilities enable longer range, higher altitude (exo-atmospheric) and more precise ballistic missile engagements. The combined interception capabilities of the Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 will significantly reduce the possibilities of ballistic missiles impacting the State of Israel.

This morning in a formal ceremony, the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), a division of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, transferred the operational Arrow-3 interceptors to the Israeli Air Force (IAF) Aerial Defense Array. The Arrow-3 development program, one of the joint programs between Israel and the United States, was exceptionally co-managed by the US Missile Defense Agency and IMDO. The US contribution to the program is a key reason Israel has achieved this remarkable accomplishment. Additionally, Boeing (US), the major subcontractor to IAI/MLM, played a prominent role in the development and production of the components for the innovative Arrow-3 interceptor.

During the integration process of the new interceptor, the weapons system components were fully upgraded. These substantial improvements are the results of the finest minds in the defense industry, who diligently worked day and night to achieve this milestone. The Battle Management Center (made by Elbit) has new significant capabilities as well as the radar detection array (made by IAI/ELTA), which improved its ability to take on the increasingly growing threat.

As the threats continue to grow and new emerging threats surface, IMOD, IMDO and the US are dedicated to the continued development and enhancement of the Israeli Ballistic Missile Defense elements and systems to provide the appropriate defense solutions. Undeniably, the Arrow Weapon System's unique and expanding capabilities place Israel among the most advanced countries in the World in the ability to defense against ballistic missile threats.
