If there is huge population and jobless then id certainly prefer 2nd option. Wat would automation bring in if the ppl are jobless. Some automation are necessary for production speed and quality. But others like tractor driving is unnecessary for huge n jobless population.

First of all , more Chinese are getting richer and they are not willing to pay low to work just farmer watering the field as employee. Factories are getting hard time finding manpower to fill up the production post and now you say people will be jobless? Do you know its difficult to find a bus driver in developed countries? Automation and driverless will solve problem and not create problem by needing to import foreign manpower which immigration integration causes a lot of friction among citizen.
