Minister thrashes waiter, denies incident
Thursday September 22, 2005
By Rauf Klasra
ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Wasi Zafar reportedly thrashed a young waiter of a local hotel in Islamabad last night, said eye witnesses. When the incident occurred, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Naurez Shakoor, some other ministers and journalists of a private TV channel were also present.
According to eye witnesses account, Wasi Zafar went to dine at the hotel with his family members late night. Reportedly, one waiter, Zulifkar, caused some embarrassment to the minister who used objectionable language against the waiter. The waiter reacted to it, following which Wasi thrashed Zulifkar.
None of those present, including the ministers, could dare to rescue the waiter. The witnesses said the hotel management expressed their regret to the minister. When contacted by this correspondent, Law Minister Wasi Zafar termed the report about the incident a big lie and a 'speculation' aired by some of his opponents after he started taking on the powerful mafia in his own ministry.
He categorically denied the occurrence of the incident. He said please ask all those journalists who were present whether this incident occurred and they would give evidence in his favour. He also promised to give a detailed interview to The News to explain certain important events that according to him caused his character assassination.
Mr Zafar said it was quite unfortunate that he was being subjected to such kind of propaganda and media was also highlighting such reports. He said it was the role of the media to verify speculations before publication.
Wasi Zafar said he was a very fair man and did not like questionable dealing and working of many officials who were now trying to settle scores with him by telling such tales to media to malign him in the eyes of people. He condemned the forces who he claimed were indulging in his character assassination as he had refused to make compromise on his principled stand.
