Washington on Monday welcomed Indias generous bilateral assistance to Afghanistan as Afghan president Hamid Karzai is on a three-day state visit to India.
Sate Department spokesperson Patrick Ventrell told reporters, We welcome efforts by Afghanistans neighbours and other regional actors to promote Afghanistans stability and economic development.
Without commenting on n reports about Kabul seeking supply of military equipment from New Delhi, State Department spokesperson Patrikc Ventrell said, We continue to welcome Indias generous bilateral assistance programme with Afghanistan, its leadership on private sector investment there, its leadership promoting regional economic integration and linkages. I dont have anything for you on a military relationship.
According to reports Afghan president Hamid Karzai will ask India to boost its assistance to Afghan army forces during his meeting with the Indian government officials.
Afghan officials ahead of Karzais visit to India said president Hamid Karzai would be asking India to help with military needs and shortages.
India is has already provided equipments and assistance to Afghan security forces and a number of Afghan army officers are currently busy with their training at Indian institutions.
However enhanced military cooperation demand by Afghan government from India would mean supply of heavy weapons, planes, armoured vehicles and a range of other military supplies.
Transfer of Indian arms to Kabul would be seen as deeply provocative by neighbouring Pakistan, however, Afgahn officials have long been insisting that they are short of proper military equipments.
